After the astounding success of the program of Nigra sum during the 2023 Boston Early Music Festival, La Donna Musicale and Rumbarroco continue exploring the repertory that praises “dark-skinned” women in songs and polyphonic settings that highlight them in the Ibero-American repertory. Director Laury Gutiérrez leads us on a musical voyage from the Iberian Renaissance to African-influenced folk traditions in contemporary South America. The program features settings of Nigra sum sed formosa from the Song of Songs and other selections from Spanish songbooks (Cancioneros) with endearing depictions of Morenas, interspersed with dances. Selections include music by Manuel Machado and Juan Vásquez, as well as the Italian Tarquinio Merula.

La Donna Musicale explores the distinctive secular contributions of women composers from Paris to the French Baroque and Rococo genres of airs sérieux and airs à boire (serious and drinking songs). These song forms celebrate passionate longing and dissolute intoxication. Of Julie Pinel (fl. 1737), our featured composer, we include several selections from her 1737 publication Nouveau recueil d’airs. Music composed by unknown Parisian women and by Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre is included as well. This program highlights the luxuriant environment of an intimate Parisian salon, replete with the sounds of voices in solo, duo, and trio settings, along with flute accompaniment and supported by the captivating tones of the harpsichord and viola da gamba.

Performers
Adriana Ruiz, soprano
Daniela Tosic, mezzo-soprano
Fausto Miro, tenor
Na’ama Lion, flute
Julia Connor, violin
Laury Gutiérrez, viola da gamba
