So many Chinese (mostly students), Indians, Pakistani folk, French youngsters, Spanish (partying) and of course all our eastern European friends (looking serious). It was almost as if that terrible thing in Manchester (hanging over us) had made the good folk get out there and mingle and have a good time - damn you this way of life is ours to live to the full. And Yorkshire folk.. embracing all this multiculturalism, just has the effect of making new more potent version of Yorkshireness. The hair and tattoos, the laddish banter, the dressed up going to weddings in the town hall. .
All of life here in one spot Just like after hosting the Tour de France in Yorkshire, we have given birth to the Tour de Yorkshire. See how that cultural mixing can produce new versions of our identity. The craft and food and drink stalls all full of keen and eager (I dare say hipster) business people starting out are embracing Yorkshire as a brand.. Big Style! And so innovative..and fun. Yorkshire Pies, Yorkshire Pickles, Yorkshire Chilly (there is cultural mix and rebirth in itself). I bought a a bottle of Gin, distilled in with the essence of Yorkshire Tea in it. It's very nice too. The busiest street food by far: Caribbean Fusion, a mix again.. and a huge following. Congrats on the longest queues.
So.. I sat alone in the sunshine on the terrace of a bar, in the midst of the familiar crowd, taking it all in. Feeling a little emotional. Sunglasses hiding my watery eyes. Thinking to my self.. look at all this love and humanity, yes it's true.. we do have more in common than what divides us.
It's June for goodness sake.. The Summer is here.
Have a great weekend. Enjoy yourself.. it's important.
Next week news from China.
Take care..
