Copyright Laws

Complying with Copyright Laws

Information By: Brotherhood Mutual

It's illegal to use someone else's creative work without permission, even for a good cause
In our digital culture, it seems everything has a “share” button on it. For ministries, sharing the intellectual property of others—like photos, music, and video—could be a violation of copyright laws. Ministry leaders must understand and follow these laws to avoid costly fines and ensure that artists are justly compensated.

What is Copyright?
Copyright law is designed to protect people who produce original literary, musical, dramatic, artistic, or other works. It covers nearly everything that can be seen, heard or touched: books, CDs, movies, photographs, plays, and more.

The law gives original authors the exclusive right to:

▪ Copy, print or reprint the work.
▪ Perform it publicly.
▪ Sell or distribute it.
▪ Revise it, arrange it, or transform it.
▪ Record it.
Copy, print or reprint the work.
Perform it publicly.
Sell or distribute it.
Revise it, arrange it, or transform it.
Record it.

These rights belong to the person who created the content, not anyone who has access to it.

The existence of a copyright isn’t always obvious. U.S. law doesn’t require a copyrighted work to bear a copyright notice, so it’s a good idea to research copyright information before displaying or copying work that isn’t original.

Someone who infringes upon a creator’s rights can be fined from $500 to $20,000 per infringed work, even if the violation was unintentional. If an organization knowingly breaks the law, an additional $100,000 penalty can be added.

The way to avoid infringing on a creator’s rights is to obtain permission first. Acknowledging the source of the copyrighted material does not substitute for obtaining permission.

What Should Churches Know?

From practicing choir songs to publishing the monthly newsletter, there are plenty of instances when ministry personnel deal with copyright issues. Here are a few “hot spots” for copyright infringement:

Gay Girl, Good God: The Story of Who I Was and Who God Has Always Been

By Jackie Hill Perry

Jackie Hill Perry

Jackie Hill Perry is a writer, poet, and artist whose work has been featured on the Washington Times, The 700 Club, Desiring God, The Gospel Coalition, and other publications.

Since becoming a Christian in 2008, she has been compelled to use her speaking and teaching gifts to share the light of the gospel of God as authentically as she can. At home she is a wife to Preston and Mommy to Eden and Autumn.

"I used to be a lesbian..."

In Gay Girl, Good God, author Jackie Hill Perry shares her own story, offering practical tools that helped her in the process of finding wholeness. Jackie grew up fatherless and experienced gender confusion. She embraced masculinity and homosexuality with every fiber of her being. She knew that Christians had a lot to say about all of the above. But was she supposed to change herself? How was she supposed to stop loving women, when homosexuality felt more natural to her than heterosexuality ever could?

At age nineteen, Jackie came face-to-face with what it meant to be made new. And not in a church, or through contact with Christians. God broke in and turned her heart toward Him right in her own bedroom in light of His gospel.

Read in order to understand. Read in order to hope. Or read in order, like Jackie, to be made new.

What is the M25 Diaper Run? M25 Diaper Run is a coast to coast mission in which motorcyclist ride from the East coast to the West coast in less than 50 hours to raise awareness, diapers and funds for Royal Home Ministries.

Included under the Falcon Children’s Home, the Royal Home is a maternity home for young mothers. Since it’s inception in 1992, the Royal Home has ministered to over 357 mothers.

The Royal Home offers care, counseling and educational opportunities for young pregnant mothers in a nurturing, protected atmosphere. The Royal Home is committed to serving clients from any race, religion, or national origin. No one is turned away because of their lack of funds. The ultimate goal of The Royal Home program is to provide an alternative to abortion, while redirecting and enriching the lives of expectant mothers.

Through this program, mothers are provided with the opportunity to prepare for life outside of The Royal Home. Opportunities such as in-house classes like childbirth, newborn basics, life skills training, and education and career planning are available. Whether the path of parenting or adoption is chosen by the client, the staff of The Royal Home is there to walk alongside mothers, ensuing the necessary safety, support, care, and encouragement needed for a healthy pregnancy and birth.

Do Not Be Anxious About Anything...

By Pam Rooker

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 NIV

2020 has been a year full of many uncertainties, and when you add kids going back to school it’s not for the faint of heart. It’s easy to feel anxious. When those feelings of anxiety and fear come against you, it’s time to stand on the promises in God’s word. We must turn to Him in prayer and petition; after we have done this His word said the peace of God will guard our hearts and minds in Jesus Christ. I don’t know about you but I want that kind of peace.

Have you connected with your girls lately? Even if you aren’t able to meet in person there are other opportunities available. You can Zoom or contact them on the various forms of social media! Be sure to let your girls know you are praying for them and you miss them.
Please let us know if we can assist with any Girls’ Ministries needs, our GM team is here to help you! Feel free to contact me at
