Sherri Says....

Hi Friends,
As we enter a new year, we want to thank all that have given gifts of time, talents and donations to BAG IT and hope we can count on your continued support. We could not do this valuable and essential work without your encouragement, commitment and care. Thank you!

visionary award

Our friends at Beacon Group surprised us with the Visionary Award at their recent Holiday Celebration. The Visionary Award recognizes businesses for their commitment to providing meaningful employment to workers with disabilities. We are proud and thankful to partner with this invaluable organization in Southern Arizona.

A big shout out to Epic Rides! They have once again chosen BAG IT as its primary beneficiary for the upcoming 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo Ride Feb. 13-15 near Catalina, AZ. We invite you to join the extreme fun to cheer on the riders, volunteer, and come visit us in what I call the “Woodstock of Mountain Biking.” You have to see it to believe it! For more information, click here. To volunteer for the event, sign up here or if you want to help us at the BAG IT booth, contact us at info@bagit4u.org

April 12 is our 4th annual Be There for BAG IT Chili Cook-Off at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix. Time to find a sponsor, round up a team, and join us for an afternoon of outdoor fun and heated competition for the best chili this side of a chuck wagon. See our website for more information or contact us.

With thanks,

When patients come in for the first time, they are very scared, very uncertain and insecure. Once I provide them with the BAG IT bag, they say they can now sleep better at night because they have more information and know more than when they first came in. They feel more secure asking the doctor questions. They also gain more confidence speaking with their family members. BAG IT is a great asset to our program for breast cancer survivorship. Thank you so much for all you do and for having them available in Spanish which is important for our community.

Sonoran Desert Corvettes Tucson was organized in July 2005 for enthusiasts to get together and participate in activities with America’s only true sports car, the Chevrolet Corvette. Through a variety of activities and events each year, Sonoran Desert Corvettes members raise money for local nonprofit organizations in our community. BAG IT is grateful for the new support!

Call for chemo caps! With winter upon us, we are in need of knitters, crocheters, and sewing machine operators as we ramp up our supply of chemo caps to ship with the BAG IT bags to the medical providers distributing the bags. The pattern is easy and instruction is available if you are interested and just need help getting started. Let us know by email: info@bagit4u.org

A big Homecoming win for the Wildcats the night before and terrific weather combined to make for a perfect morning to Take a Hike for BAG IT! Enthusiastic guides from Summit Hut set out with a group each hour while many hit the trail on their own. Spirits were high and it seemed there were more hikers than ever on the Ventana Trail. Led by our favorite Pied Piper, Mary Carhuff, a large group headed out on a meditative walk on Loews Resort grounds as they watched and listened to all its wonders. One follower described it best in her blog: click here

cheerleaders-hike-14

Inside following the hike and walk, the enthusiastic Mountain View Cheerleaders led a BAG IT cheer. Tables heavy with raffle and silent auction offerings were hoppin’ as bidders deposited raffle tickets and stealthily raised their silent auction bids on their favorite prizes. Loews served a fantastic brunch buffet a la tailgate. Chef’s delicate cheese blintzes seemed to be the clear favorite of the crowd!

Our emcee, KOLD news anchor Dan Marries, donned his personalized BAG IT football jersey donated by a trusty volunteer. Football in hand, he ceremoniously kicked off the celebration of homecomings by bursting through the “Fight the Fear” banner stretched across the room by the cheer squad.

Sherri Romanoski and Dan Marries then crowned Beaver and Melissa Simpson as the BAG IT Homecoming King and Queen — the first male and female hikers to reach Maiden Pools.

Sherri recognized the long list of ‘alumni’ sponsors who have consistently supported BAG IT throughout the 11-year-history of Take A Hike for BAG IT. Arizona Oncology was gratefully acknowledged as Presenting Sponsor for each and every year!

Almost $95,000 was raised by this year’s Take A Hike for BAG IT. All proceeds from this event will be used to continue to provide BAG IT at no charge to newly diagnosed cancer patients.
Thanks to all of our donors, volunteers, and those who attended the event and made it such a success. Happy trails to you…
