In this issue:

Greetings NJICL Friends and Family,

Happy Monday evening and welcome to another edition of the NJICL Single Track Times! In just under three weeks the New Jersey League's second season kicks off with the Wild West Chester Season Opener! Rest assured that I am keeping a close eye on the weather, and remain cautiously optimistic that mother nature will come through for us. Please check out the race specific section below for more details and contingency plans in case the winter decides to stick around longer than we are all hoping.

The league staff has been tirelessly working behind the scenes to plan every detail of the season, and are super stoked with the League's growth this year. Our registration numbers are steadily climbing, with middle school registrations nearly equaling our entire student body from last year. How cool is that?! We are also up to 21 teams this season! We have also been seeing increased participation in our Try it Out Program, where this past Sunday's GRiT ride saw over a dozen girls riding together on the trails surrounding Gloucester County Park. I am happy to report that the GRiT ride outnumbered the boy's Try it Out participants, and a super fun time was had by all! NJ Girls Rock!

Keep an eye on our Try it Out page for more ride dates!

This issue contains some required communication from NICA as we draw closer to race season, and a race course/weather update which may very well impact our schedule. Please take some time to read through the information, and as always please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you and happy trails!

A.K.A. The Weather Situation

The NJICL Staff (The absolute best race staff out there!) has been hard at work surveying all 2018 race venues after the incredibly harsh run of late winter storms we have experienced in recent weeks. Our race venue at Chester has been hit particularly hard.

We are happy to report that a majority of the downed trees have been cleared by our venue partners in Chester Township (thank you Aaron and the whole township staff!) but we still have a few problem areas which need addressing in other areas of the course.

Of much greater concern is this week's storm, and pre-existing snow and groundwater conditions. About 3/4 of the open fields are still covered in snow, and the single track trails need time to dry. The current 10-day forecast is calling for snow tomorrow into Wednesday and then some freeze thaw.

The last week of March looks promising for rain to wash it all away, with temperatures in the 50's to help out.

That being said, the course conditions may not be suitable for racing in time for April 8th. We will keep you informed via race alerts as we get closer. The current possibilities are:

1. Hold the race if conditions are suitable for racing. (Best case scenario) *We consider safety of our student athletes and environmental impact on the course in determining race suitability.
2. Swap venues/dates with a future race. (Pending permission/permits)
3. Postpone until the following weekend, April 14th (pre-ride) and 15th (Race day) Also pending permit approval
4. Re-schedule for June 10th (Our pre-planned re-sched date for the year)

As you can imagine, anything other than holding a race as scheduled comes with challenges. We are aware of them and will make every effort to minimize conflicts, but our absolute first priority is the safety and well-being of our students. Every decision we make is with them, our #1 customers and reason we do this, at the forefront of our thoughts.

Now would be a great time to review our race refund & weather policy.

We should have a better idea of the most likely scenario after this week's storm passes and we hear from our venue partners on contingencies, and will keep you updated with race alerts if anything changes.

Thank you!

The view from the camping area into the infield at Camp Edge

For the first time in NJ league history, we will be permitting overnight camping at this race venue!

Thanks to the amazing folks at Ranch Hope and Camp Edge, the camp will be open for overnight camping on Saturday, April 21st. Some guidelines:

▪ Parental supervision required, no exceptions. Coaches are responsible for their students during practices and pre-rides, the league is responsible for a safe and fun race experience, but neither can provide supervision on Saturday evening.
▪ All Camp Edge rules are in effect. No alcohol on site, pack in and pack out, etc.
▪ Camp sites are rustic/unimproved, and first come-first served. No hookups available for RV's.
▪ Families will be permitted to setup in the team's pitzone area on grass, or along the dedicated camping area which our ops folks will direct you to.
▪ All camp sites in the pitzone area must be out of travel lanes and broken down prior to race start.

Rules

Equipment rules cover equipment requirements necessary to compete in a NICA race. These rules cover approved helmets, bike, bike equipment and race accessory requirements. Below are some highlighted rules as outlined in the NICA Rulebook:

RULE 4.5. HANDLEBAR END PLUGS AND STEM CAPS REQUIRED
For safety reasons, handlebar end plugs and stem caps are required.

RULE 4.8. SWITCHING BIKES
Student-athletes must complete the entire race on the same bicycle upon which the race was begun. A 10-minute penalty applies for switching bicycles in a race.

RULE 4.10. FOOTWEAR
Student-athletes must wear appropriate footwear. Footwear must be fully enclosed and fastened with either straps, buckles, or laces.

RULE 4.12. NUMBER PLATES
Student-athletes must affix an official NICA league number plate to their bikes at NICA league races. The number plate should be attached with at least three fasteners and must be on the bike at all times before and after competing, including the pre-ride, and should also remain on the bike at any time the student is riding at the event.

Be informed on all of the NICA Rules!

It is everyone's, including our Student Athlete's, responsibility to read and understand the NICA Rulebook. Coaches and parents, please be sure to read them and have your Student Athletes read them. We encourage coaches to incorporate rules training into practice. Consider reviewing a rules chapter per week, or facilitating a rules game.

The New Jersey League is committed to making sure every student-athlete and coach has the opportunity to participate in all events, regardless of financial situation. Through the generous support of league sponsors and donors, we're able to provide direct support, through individual scholarships and loaner bikes, to offset expenses directly related to participation in league and team activities. For scholarships, complete the form located at this link, then email confidentially to ken@newjerseymtb.org.

To request a loaner bike, the student must be "practice ready" in our PitZone software. After that, parents should speak to the team's head coach, team director, or email info@newjerseymtb.org, for a link to our Loaner Bike Request form. Once the form is filled out and submitted, we will process the request and get a bike to the student.
