A Stop Along the Way

Friday, March 31st, felt more like winter than the cusp of spring. It was only a few degrees above freezing and the sky was spitting rain that felt like snow.

It was in this grim weather that East Bay resident Carol P., stepped off the bus at the “white church” on County Road in Barrington. A regular RIPTA rider, she periodically travels to East Providence for appointments that help her deal with the memory loss she suffered due to an illness. This was not a good day. She says she was a little disoriented when she got off the bus. “I got off there by mistake,” she recalled recently, “I didn’t realize how far I really was from my destination.”

Carol started walking north on Route 114 determined to make it to her appointment which was about 3 1/3 miles away. Her determination turned to concern, however, the farther she walked along the shoulder of the busy road in the cold, rainy weather. Then Carol heard someone say, “Hey there, are you okay – would you like to get on the bus?” She looked up and it was RIPTA driver John Cruz who was headed north on the Route 60 line. “He didn’t have to stop,” she said. “There wasn’t a bus stop in sight.”

Public Meeting on Downtown Transit Connector (DTC)

The City of Providence and RIPTA are inviting public coment on Kennedy Plaza and the Downtown Tansit Connector (DTC) -- a planned, high-frequency transit corridor in downtown Providence. A public information session will be held Tuesday May 9, 2017, from 5:30 to 7 PM at the Joseph Doorley Municipal Building at 444 Westminister Street in Providence.

The City is in the process of looking at options for a long-term vision for Kennedy Plaza to make it a more vibrant and attractive city center while also accommodating public transit. At the same time, RIPTA is working to advance design and engineering of the Downtown Transit Connector. The DTC will create six “station-like” stops on a high frequency route between Providence Station and the Hospital District, and includes service through Kennedy Plaza. These stops will be designed to be unique and highly visible. Features will include shelters, real time bus arrival signage, bike infrastructure and other passenger amenities to create attractive public spaces.
