Dear Makutsi Friends,

So far 2018 has been a very busy year, both on the lodge as well as in other areas of our operation. Luckily, we always have some nice images to share with you! We especially love to share images from guests, as they show best what kind of experiences any visitor to Makutsi wil be able to encounter.

So without further delay, we are happy to share with you:

▪ A short summary from a client, explaning her favourite safari experience at Makutsi. Maybe this short story will motivate some of you readers to also send us a summary of you favourite Makutsi experience.
▪ Some beautiful images that clients have taken over the last few months at Makutsi.
▪ Many of you would have seen our staff at Makutsi wear a star badge on their chest, and might have wondered what exacly it means. Today we share a short explanation with you...
▪ Cheetah mother and daughter at play

Florentine Weiser - My favourite safari experience

Being on a game drive can be very different. You may have exciting sightings or just the most beautiful scenes you ever seen. Though each game drive is different and very special, I remember one game drive as breath-taking. We drove for quite a while when we finally arrived at a rock formation. The guide gave us a sign to keep quiet. I can tell you, that was not really necessary since nobody could speak any longer after recognizing what was on the rock: a leopard mum with her two gorgeous cubs. The only sound you heard was the click of the cameras. It was awesome to watch them playing around, challenging their mum by climbing up and down the rock.

The most facinating was the female leopard since she was half blind. A wonderful animal and a great mummy for the two little cats. I will never foget this experience and the great picture I could take is now printed on a large-format canvas and will always remind me of one the unique moments in the South African bush.

The first 4 photos were taken at the hippo hide, between 7 and 18 August 2018. Leopard in tree and lion cubs are from game drives, and are his favourite sightings.

Badges of faith

Ever wondered what the badges many of the Makutsi staff are wearing symbolize?
They are symbols of the Zion Christian Church (or ZCC), also known as Boyne. It is the largest African initiated church operating across Southern Africa.

Its members, estimated to number between 5 and 6 million in more than 4,000 parishes, live primarily in urban townships and rural communities. The church is well known by the abbreviation, ZCC, pronounced "zed-see-see."

The Zion Christian Church fuses Christian beliefs with African traditions. In South Africa, practitioners are identified by the badge they wear – a green felt square with either a metal star or a dove. The ZCC split when its founder, Engenas Barnabas Lekganyane, died and both his sons wanted to take over the leadership. Joseph leads the faction of the church with a dove as its emblem; he renamed this branch St Engenas Zion Christian Church. Edward leads the faction that uses the star as its emblem and this larger faction hosts a pilgrimage to its headquarters in Moria, Limpopo province, every year.

Cheetah at play

Just arrived! These photos were taken on the moring of 30 August in Makutsi North. Our female cheetah and her female (not so small anymore) cub at play. It has been a pleasure seeing this young female grow up on Makutsi, and soon she will be moved to another reserve somewhere in South Africa, to improve the genetic pool of the cheetah population in the country.
