It’s officially summer, which means school is out for children across the country. While summer vacation means fun in the sun for some, it’s an added anxiety for many households. Low-income families, who are already stretched thin, have the extra burden of figuring out how to feed their children. With impossible decisions like keeping the lights on or being able to afford groceries, access to free summer meals eases this load on struggling families and provides the necessary nourishment kids need to grow.

It’s no secret that millions of kids across America who rely on free and reduced-priced meals go hungry when school’s out. The USDA’s Summer Food Service Program fills the gap by providing free, nutritious meals to school-age kids, but only 1 out of every 7 eligible kids participate in Summer Meals because they and their families don’t know about the program or its locations.
