BILL C-16 PASSES THROUGH HOUSE OF COMMONS
Sadly, MPs voted to pass federal Bill C-16 this past Friday, bringing us closer to men being permitted in all female spaces in Canada and potentially forcing Canadians to use pronouns such as "Ze", "Zir", "Xe", and "Xim".
This bill has been rushed through the legislative process; After being introduced on May 17th, Bill C-16 passed easily through a vote in the House of Commons on October 18th and went on to be studied by the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights.
We were shocked to learn that the Committee on Justice and Human Rights did not hold any public hearings on the bill - an "outrageous sidestep of democracy." Bill C-16 will now face the Senate for voting as well as study by the Senate's Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs.
THE SENATE & BILL C-279
Bill C-16 is actually the 5th time a gender identity bill has been introduced in Parliament. Most recently, a very similar bill went through the House of Commons: Bill C-279 passed through the House in Sept. 2011 but was halted when it reached the Senate, where it faced more scrutiny and a number of controversial amendments which the Transgender community opposed. The bill was ultimately dropped when a federal election was called.
This means that the Senate is willing to consider opposition to the bill and they need to hear from us now!
