Playground-building service trips to Guatemala

Summer Service Learning Program: May 16-22 (Deadline to sign up extended to March 7th)

Looking for a meaningful way to go abroad? Something to do over break? A chance to use your Spanish skills, a vehicle for helping others, an opportunity to brush up your resume, a way to have an adventure?

Say yes to service and adventure with Play360. Spots are still available for our Alternative Spring Break and Summer Service Learning Program. Both trips offer the chance to work with a community in Guatemala to build a dynamic playspace for a local school.

You will play a key role in creating educational tools and resources to improve student and parent engagement and teacher effectiveness. In our free time, we will visit the colonial town of Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage site, climb a volcano and zipline through a rainforest high above scenic Lake Atitlan, relax in volcanic hot springs, and visit local markets and historic sites. You'll return home with new adventures under your belth and strengthened cross-cultural competency and teamwork skills (essential in a 21st century world), but most importantly having helped a community help itself.

On a Play360 service trip, you will have the chance to authentically experience life in this wonderful country while making a real difference. Register online here.

Scholarships available!

Scholarships are available for $250 to $500. To apply, you must register online by the deadline (March 7th for Summer Service Learning Program) as well as submit an 800 word (or less) essay by that date via email to info@play360.org. The essay should explain your motivation for participating in the trip and what the scholarship will help you accomplish.

Costs

The program fee for a service trip with Play360 is $1500. This covers all of your in-country expenses-- three meals a day, all in-country travel, housing, and all of the adventure activities like ziplining, visiting Lake Atitlan, etc.
Participants also commit to fundraising at least $1000 for the local community.

Why Playgrounds?

We see playgrounds as more than just playgrounds. They provide a safe place for free play, which is essential to early childhood development.

But in Guatemala, like in much of the developing world, learning resources are scarce. More than 30 percent of the population remains illiterate, and that rate goes up among indigenous populations, who are disproportionately affected by poverty in the country.

Our partner organization in Guatemala is Fundap, an established nonprofit that oversees 180 schools throughout Western Guatemala.

Fundap's mission is "development with dignity," and the organization works primarily with indigenous populations in the areas of economic development, health, and education.

To date, we have worked with organizations like Fundap across the world to build more than 50 playgrounds in 10 countries.

Play360 playgrounds provide large-scale, hands-on learning resources to keep kids engaged in school. Take the tire calculator, for example-- something that is viewed as trash is transformed into a tool for learning numbers and simple equations.
