SWING

By: Dr. Rob Helton

Face Book vs Porch Swings

I like Facebook. It is a window into my past. It keeps me connected to old friends, new friends and friends I don’t even know. It educates and entertains. It has lots of funny video clips. (Did you see the one with the guy dancing to Uptown Funk on the tread mill?) I really like Facebook. That’s why I had to give it up… sort of.

I mean, I haven’t really, totally stopped getting on Facebook (this article will be posted to the church’s Facebook page), but I’ve been forced to rethink my unconditional commitment to it. It’s not that Satan used Facebook to invade my body (I don’t think). But I found myself somewhat unsatisfied after spending an extended period on it. It’s hard to explain.

My gut feelings were confirmed while sitting on the porch swing. My wife, Cindy, and I decided to take advantage of a relatively cool evening. We went out on our back porch, sat down on the porch swing and talked. A novel idea! We talked about nothing in particular for no particular reason. We just talked and swung in the porch swing. (Right now I have the overwhelming urge to write a couple verses of Swingin, the country classic by John Anderson, but I’ll resist.)

The point I’m trying to make is this. When we were done talking about nothing in particular for no particular reason, I felt full and good. When I realize that I’ve given up thirty or forty-five minutes of my life on Facebook, I don’t feel full and good. Sometimes I feel a little bit empty. Sometimes I feel a little bit cheated.

I think there might be something deeply spiritual going on here. The scriptures teach that human beings are sacred creatures. We are created in God’s image, what theologians refer to as the imago dei (the image of God). For that reason, something happens when one human being actually spends time with another with another human being. I don’t think it can be duplicated on social media platforms. It can happen when two people sit together in a porch swing or even in a church pew. It’s sacred. It’s a God thing.

Please don’t misunderstand. I’m not saying we should all quit Facebook (although most young people have already moved on to Twitter and Instagram), I’m just saying that maybe the next time you have a choice between an hour sitting in a porch swing talking to a real person (or a good dog), or an hour on Facebook looking at videos posted by people you don’t even know, you may want to give the porch swing a try.

Blessings,
Pastor Rob

Consistory Notes…

Meeting Minutes

August 13, 2019

Present: Cristy Detter, Harry Hight, Larry Kiziah, Tommy Smith, Juanita Morrison, Pastor Rob Helton, Gene Hoover, Connie Griffin, Ron Williams, Hank Mathis, Pastor Rick Crotts

Prayer requests were received and the meeting opened with prayer.
A motion was made and seconded to accept the minutes of the last meeting.

Pastor Rob asked the consistory to begin to pray for the leadership of our church as new elders and deacons are needed for next year’s consistory. He has contacted Lenoir Rhyne about the possibility of internships to help with the youth. He was given the name of the person that could help and is waiting to hear back.

Nancy Jarrett submitted her resignation from music director/organist effective September 1. The consistory will begin to look for an organist/music director. Rick explained that finding an organist will be difficult. On Sunday, September 1, the church will plan a reception for Nancy where she will be recognized for her dedicated service to the music ministry of St. Paul’s.

Pastor Rob’s continuing education will pick back up in September.
Pastor Rob requested 2-3 days away for a spiritual retreat. A motion was made and seconded to approve the request.

A doorbell with a camera is needed at the front door, so Donna or others can see who is at the door before going to the door. A motion was made and seconded to check into the existing security system company and see if one could be installed through them and then if not to look into other options.

Old Business:

A letter on behalf of the consistory was presented to the consistory and will be mailed to Gene to thank him for volunteering his time for many years to maintain our heating and air systems at the church.

3 estimates were presented to the consistory for yearly maintenance on the heating and air units. One more estimate will be collected before the consistory makes a decision.

Estimates for the necessary repairs to the roof and soffit were presented. Repairs that are necessary are repairing and sealing the firewall to stop the leaks, re-roof some of the valleys, place vinyl siding over the soffit and add vinyl around the sanctuary, cleaning and painting. A motion was made and seconded to present all the repair information to the congregation on September 8.

New Business:

St. Paul’s Scholarship Fund Account currently is under only Ken Bolick’s name. The Endowment fund states that trustees/church treasurer can have access to the account. A motion was made and seconded to add Jean Jarrett (church treasurer) and Bob Jarrett (trustee) to the account. The motion carried. \
Applications for the Scholarship fund will be copied and distributed to the trustees. The endowment fund state that the trustees will inform the applicants in writing if they are granted the funds. Due to Kenny Bolick only having access to the fund at this time, the Consistory discussed using church funds to cover the scholarship amount until additional names are added to the Endowment Fund. A motion was made and seconded to grant the church treasurer permission to use funds from the general budget to cover the Scholarships that the trustees award. When the Endowment funds are accessible, then church funds will be replaced.
