ELIE WIESEL: A LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS OF HUMAN INJUSTICE

Dear Friend:

Today, we lost a voice of justice, love, compassion, and warning on what happens when good people stop caring and turn evil.

Elie Wiesel, the Auschwitz survivor who became an eloquent witness for the six million Jews slaughtered in World War II and who, more than anyone, seared the memory of the Holocaust on the world’s conscience, died today at his home in Manhattan. He was 87.

Elie Wiesel was a beacon of light fully rooted in his life experience. His wisdom and philosophy of life was shaped in the fires of suffering and the most brutal cruelty known to human kind. Not unlike what 100 million native Americans, and the African-American slaves suffered at the hands of the white race in our own land. Not unlike what people in the Middle East are suffering at the hands of extreme, evil, demonic possessed terrorist groups.

Like my father, Elie Wiesel died today, on the "Sabbath." He rests now from his journey on this earth. But Wiesel's legacy looms larger than his life, and projects its powerful beam of light into the future generation. A survivor of the Holocaust, Wiesel spoke vehemently against the abuses of humanity and authoritarianism.

Wiesel himself and his foundation lost vasts amounts of money in 2009 at the hands of a fellow Jew, Bernie Madoff, a representative of our culture of greed and the abuses committed against innocent people. Madoff was an American hedge-fund investment manager and former chairman of the NASDAQ who operated history’s largest Ponzi scheme.

Because of his first hand experience with the greedy capitalism of the USA, Wiesel spoke not only of abuse suffered during the Holocaust, but became a global voice against all abuses. Click here to read more on Elie Wiesel

Wiesel was defined not so much by the work he did as by the gaping void he filled. In the aftermath of the Germans’ systematic massacre of more than 6 million Jews, no voice had emerged to drive home the enormity of what had happened and how it had changed mankind’s conception of itself and of God.

THANK YOU MR. WIESEL FOR STANDING UP! YOUR LIFE WILL CONTINUE TO INSPIRE US

WE MUST NEVER FORGET WHAT WIESEL TAUGHT US ABOUT JUSTICE AND THE EVIL OF INDIFFERENCE.

As a tribute I am posting some of his favorite statements. I pray they will inspire you to live a life of compassion.

“The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference. The opposite of art is not ugliness, it's indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it's indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, it's indifference.” ― Elie Wiesel

“There is divine beauty in learning... To learn means to accept the postulate that life did not begin at my birth. Others have been here before me, and I walk in their footsteps. The books I have read were composed by generations of fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, teachers and disciples. I am the sum total of their experiences, their quests. And so are you.” ― Elie Wiesel

“When a person doesn’t have gratitude, something is missing in his or her humanity. A person can almost be defined by his or her attitude toward gratitude.” ― Elie Wiesel

“No human race is superior; no religious faith is inferior. All collective judgments are wrong. Only racists make them” ― Elie Wiesel

“We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Wherever men and women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must - at that moment - become the center of the universe.” ― Elie Wiesel, The Night Trilogy: Night/Dawn/The Accident

“I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides.” ― Elie Wiesel

“Whoever survives a test, whatever it may be, must tell the story. That is his duty.” ― Elie Wiesel

“Indifference is the sign of sickness, a sickness of the soul more contagious than any other.” ― Elie Wiesel, The Judges

“Love makes everything complicated.” ― Elie Wiesel

“No human being is illegal.” ― Elie Wiesel

*One of mt very favorites quotes from Wiesel because it opens my mind to the paradoxical pain of the heart of God.

“God is God BECAUSE he remembers.” ― Elie Wiesel

“I believe in God--in spite of God! I believe in Mankind--in spite of Mankind! I believe in the Future--in spite of the Past!” ― Elie Wiesel

LET GOD LOVE YOU FIRST, Friend, then LEAD LIFE from within!
