Press Release

Justice in Favor of the Oppressors:

Horse-drawn Carriages are back in Montreal

For immediate release

Montreal, May 25th 2016 — SPA Canada is outraged to learn that the court has decided to reverse the decision of Mayor Coderre and has judged in favor of the owners of horse-drawn carriages. A 9 day injunction was awarded, allowing them to continue to exploit their horses without restriction. The City of Montreal was finally beginning to position themselves as a city that respects animals, but this decision constitutes a huge step backwards.

“Cities are in no way an adequate environment for a horse. They are not adapted to walk on such hard surfaces such as asphalt, nor in such a stressful environment, with the traffic, honking, etc. It is an illusion to continue to believe that they are happy here,” states Dominique Routhier, animal biologist for SPA Canada.

Following this decision, SPA Canada asks a massive mobilisation of all Montrealers as well as all animal lovers in order to put pressure on the City of Montreal to fight so that the 9 days of operation that were awarded to the carriage drivers be the last ones.

Call the city immediately and transform your compassion into action!
