World Tofu Day 2015: Does Bill 54 truly aim at respecting the biological imperatives of animals?

For immediate release

Montreal, July 24th 2015 – For a second year in a row, SPA Canada is celebrating World Tofu Day, a day dedicated to celebrating the many alternatives that exist to animal products and the many advantages of living a cruelty-free lifestyle. World Tofu Day is also an opportunity to spreading awareness about the cruelty involved in the animal farming industry. “World Tofu Day is meant to encourage the public to see tofu in a new way: as a tasty, versatile food that can easily replace many animal derived products to avoid encouraging the horrible farming industry,” explains Gabriel Villeneuve, Director of Campaigns of SPA Canada.

On June 5th of this year, Bill 54 was presented by Quebec’s Minister of Agriculture in response to pressures to change provincial legislation with regards to animal protection. This bill is meant to insure that animals receive the necessary care to respect their biological imperatives and that they no longer be considered as property but as sentient beings. “The animal farming industry as a whole disregards all biological imperatives of the animals it exploits: from veal calves being ripped away from their mothers, to chickens being cramped in tiny wire cages their entire lives. How can we state that we consider animals as sentient beings when we allow this industry to continue?” demands Mr. Villeneuve. SPA Canada maintains that until all animals are given the same level of consideration, no law can claim to respect animals as sentient beings. “It is hypocritical to treat certain animals differently simply because we enjoy the taste of their flesh,” declares Mr. Villeneuve.

SPA Canada will be celebrating World Tofu Day this year by giving everyone an opportunity to give tofu a chance. For those who have never tried tofu, this is a great opportunity to do so! Free tofu products will be distributed by the SPA Canada team in downtown Montreal. With this campaign, SPA Canada hopes to inspire people to take a step back and truly reflect on what is in our plates and on our grills and the impact it has on animals everywhere.
