Where to visit for a unique experience?

MONA Museum

Hobart is home to the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), an internationally renowned museum, with parts of it built into a sandstone cliff and others showcasing innovative design. The museum houses an eclectic mix of ancient, modern, and contemporary art pieces from various cultures and time periods.

There's so much more to say about this museum...it is more than just a gallery or a museum, it is an experience! You'll encounter thought-provoking pieces that could challenge conventional ideas and provoke discussion. And although some of the artwork may include explicit or challenging content, that isn’t suitable for everyone, the immersive experience was one that the entire SJT team appreciated.

It is MONA's ambitious combination of these elements that sets it apart and has helped to build it’s reputation as a one-of-a-kind cultural institution.

Make sure you download the Mona App, "O", to locate you in and around the Mona museum and tells you about the work on display.

Where to soak into the local atmosphere?

Salamanca Markets

The Salamanca Market is one of Australia's most famous outdoor markets and a must-visit attraction for both locals and visitors. Every Saturday, Salamanca Place comes alive with the bustling energy of the market.

Visitors can wander through stalls selling a diverse range of goods, from locally-made crafts and artwork to fresh produce, gourmet food, clothing, jewellery, and more.

The market showcases the talents of Tasmanian artisans, designers, and producers, offering a unique opportunity to purchase handmade and locally-sourced products directly from the creators.

Located near Hobart's waterfront, the markets offer beautiful views of the harbour and surrounding mountains and it is a great place to soak in the atmosphere of this vibrant city while enjoying the natural beauty of Tasmania.

Where to spend a delightful afternoon?

Richmond

Change up the pace and leave the city for a charming stop in Richmond, a historic town known for its well-preserved Georgian architecture and picturesque setting. Richmond Bridge, built in the early 19th century, is Australia's oldest surviving stone bridge. It's an iconic landmark and a great spot for photos (Tick!)

Nestled in the heart of Tasmania's wine region, Richmond just happens to be just a short drive from the Award-Winning wines of Pooley Wines. This is a stop we couldn’t miss, and one we highly recommend. Enjoy wine tasting and a glorious lunch, with a beautiful Tasmanian view!

The wine tasting experience at Pooley Wines offers a chance to discover exceptional Tasmanian wines and enjoy a friendly and knowledgeable staff.

Mount Wellington is definitely worth adding to your itinerary while in Hobart.
Easily accessible for a day trip or even just a few hours' visit. You can drive up the mountain or take a shuttle bus if you prefer not to hike.

From the summit, you’ll discover a beautiful panoramic view of Hobart, the Derwent River, and the surrounding landscapes. The vistas are particularly stunning during sunrise and sunset.

Mount Wellington holds cultural and historical significance for the local Indigenous communities, and there are opportunities to learn about the mountain's rich heritage while visiting.
