The Brown Oscars: Felicia Montenegro, 2018

***

We Choose Art and The Mezz Gallery at The Montalbán
in collaboration with bG Gallery

EXHIBITION DATES: February 27 – March 12, 2018
"RED CARPET" OPENING RECEPTION: March 1, 7 - 10 pm
OSCARS AFTER PARTY, Sunday, March 4, 9 - 11 pm

“The Brown Oscars exhibition will be an exploration of the Oscars and a place where Vallejo hopes to inspire, incite dialog and action about the beauty of being brown and the importance of casting and hiring people of color in Hollywood.
Like much of Linda’s work, this series opens doors to deeper conversations. The work is a celebration of Hollywood nostalgia while at the same time creating an alternate reality where color politics have been switched and past Oscar winners have all become brown.” - Om Bleicher, Director, bG Gallery

RECENT EXHIBITIONS

A Universal History of Infamy: Those of This America, Getty PST LA/LA Initative, LACMA Charles White Gallery, Los Angeles, CA

This exhibition is a response to the current political and cultural environment. Artists considered questions: -How do you see your work participating in, or responding to, current dialogues? -How do you think about the power of art (and its limits) in reflecting and/or resisting socio-cultural-political contexts? -Over the past year, where have you derived inspiration? Solace?

Keepin' It Brown
bG Gallery - PST LA/LA Santa Monica, CA

‘Although political, “The Brown Dot Project” exudes the zen-like chill factor of Agnes Martin. The visual appeal of each pattern collides skillfully with the statistical backstory – transporting the viewer from abstraction to the realm of activist art reality.' - Lawrence Gipe
Art and Cake LA, September 2017.

Deconstructing Liberty:
A Destiny Manifested

curated by Marisa Caichiolo
Muzeo Museum - PST LA/LA Anaheim, CA

The exhibit gathered contemporary artists from across Latin America to question ideas of patriotism, community, citizenship, freedom, equal rights, and activism.

"We Need Protests. And Paintings""

January 2018
by Héctor Tobar

Excerpt: “Everyone was trying to discover their roots, who they were,” the artist Linda Vallejo told me last fall at a retrospective on the gallery’s four decades of Día de los Muertos work. Those artists helped make Day of the Dead, with its marigolds and sugar skulls, the newest addition to the pantheon of American ethnic holidays."

"ONE YEAR The Art of Politics in LA"

December 2017

"With “ONE YEAR,” 20 local artists, working in a variety of mediums, lay bare the emotion of the past year. Curators Joey Forsyte, Lawrence Gipe and Alex Kritselis have succeeded in channeling the power of art to reflect on what has been for many a highly confusing time. All of the artists selected for the show have a history of making political engagement integral to their artistic practices."
