The weather's warming, the house is airing... The fleas are stirring!
It's important you have a plan to prevent fleas finding their way into your household this spring. That's exactly what Buber the kitten's mum thought she had when the family dogs were bathed in a widely available flea rinse earlier this month.
Unbeknownst to Buber or his mum, many of the insecticidal ingredients in flea shampoos are highly toxic to cats. Unfortunately Buber - who loves the dogs - ingested a dangerous dose of these ingredients licking their freshly bathed coats. He presented to us having uncontrolled seizures and with severe nervous system disease, it was through some clever detective work by Dr Diana Barker that we were able to deduce the cause - permethrin poisoning!
We're glad to report Buber has been nursed back to health, and even his residual blindness appears to have now resolved - check out his amazing improvement after only a week! However, Buber's case serves as a timely warning of the potential dangers in many readily available flea treatments.
If you want effective - and less stressful - flea control measures for your cat or dog this spring, give us a call or drop on by. It is safe to assume you should NEVER apply a flea or tick treatment intended for dogs to your cat.
