We did it! The Toronto Raptors, our home-town basketball team, won the NBA Championship in 2019! The whole city had a gigantic celebration of our first sports championship since 1993! And as some expected, two of our star players chose to sign with different teams promptly after the season. What followed was a distinct sense of disappointment, and the Raptors begin to rebuild a championship team.
NewPath and our customers are on an innovation path that requires a rebuild as well. We are choosing more modern systems and new partners to work with. But sometimes we miss looking at our complex business rules adopted organically. We then try to cram our complex and sometimes byzantine rules full of "ifs", "ands" and "buts" into modern systems.
Managing against exceptions is difficult and dangerous. For example, any rule that also includes an "unless" or a "however" is complex, and should be made simpler or even eliminated. Try making your rules simpler -- it will help your implementation of new technologies and make it easier for your customers.
Here is the Summer 2019 edition (#68) of the monthly NewPath newsletter.
