New blog: The Shamima Begum case: ‘Revoking citizenship is ineffective and counterproductive’

The decision to revoke Shamima Begum’s UK citizenship is not only ineffective, but it also creates a number of legal and diplomatic problems, according to Asser Institute counter-terrorism experts Drs Christophe Paulussen and Rumyana Grozdanova. Instead, the UK should accept responsibility and rely on its regular criminal justice system.

Cities and international law in the Urban Age

On 14 & 15 March the Asser Institute will host an international conference on the internationalisation of cities: Cities and international law in the Urban Age. The conference is part of Asser’s research project on global cities and international law, ‘The Global City: The Role of Law, Then and Now’.

Cross borders with the Asser Institute @ Movies that Matter Festival 2019

The Asser Institute and the Movies that Matter festival both believe in the power of making connections, of reaching beyond one’s own circle, and of meeting others. At this year's festival, we aim to create a space where filmmakers can meet lawyers, where activists can meet academics, and where students can meet judges.

Coming up: Francophone training in International and Transnational Criminal Law

The Asser Institute is partnering with the International Nuremberg Principles Academy and the Antonio Cassese Initiative to co-organise a seminar on international and transnational criminal law. The seminar will be held as a closed event in The Hague from 18 to 22 March 2019.

Asser academic director becomes a gender champion

Asser’s academic director and professor of History and Theory of International Law at the University of Amsterdam Janne Nijman has joined the brand new Hague International Gender Champions Hub. The IGC is a leadership network that brings together female and male decision-makers to break down gender barriers.

Two souls in one breast: The international institutional lawyer as scholar and as practitioner

This OXIO Talk, organised by the Amsterdam Center for International Law (ACIL) and the Asser Institute, aims to reflect on the particularities of the professional identity of the international institutional lawyer – on the challenges this identity entails, the different audiences to which it caters and the sensibilities it fosters. The event is free of charge and will feature an informal conversation between Gabrielle Marceau and Niels Blokker, two prominent scholar-practitioners. Catherine Brölmann serves as moderator. The audience is warmly invited to take part in the discussion. More information and registration.

Workshop Film and International Law

The Asser Institute and Movies that Matter are co-organising a workshop on documentary film and international law. It uniquely combines lectures in critical theoretical analysis of human rights documentary film at the Asser Institute with a practical experience at the Movies that Matter Festival, one of the largest human rights film festivals in Europe. The workshop equips the participants to critically review and discuss the portrayal of international law in documentary film.

The workshop is linked to the festival competition programme Camera Justitia on law and justice. More information about Camera Justitia can be found here.

The Academy is taught by Dr Sofia Stolk (Asser Institute/Movies that Matter) and Professor Wouter Werner (VU Amsterdam). More information and registration.

Terrorism, Countering Terrorism and the Rule of Law

This Advanced summer programme on terrorism, counter-terrorism and the rule of law is coming back for the 9th time to bring together experts, academics and policy makers from around the world working in the field of counter-terrorism. It will take place from 26 – 30 August 2019 at the Asser Institute in the Hague.

The programme, co-organised by the Asser Institute and the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism – The Hague (ICCT), offers an in-depth look at the challenges that come with adopting and implementing counter-terrorism measures while ensuring respect for human rights, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law. During an intensive week, experts from within academia and practice explore international and domestic legal aspects of counter-terrorism. More information and registration.
