The Slip Christmas

Hi, poetry-lover! No tacky holiday sweaters or bad family photos here. While we are taking a break from one of our monthly reading venues as a nod to the season (no 4th Friday open mic at taZa on Christmas day), there’s still plenty of poetry to be had. Why not try joining us for a freewrite Tuesday or Monday critique night? If performance is more your thing, slip on down to the end and take a gander at some of the events on the horizon for 2016.

Poetry & Jazz Tasting
C'est Le Vin, 15 N. 17th St. RVA 23219
Thursday December 3, 7pm
Our last reading event of the year! Come out and get your festive spirit on with us! Over the course of the evening, local wordsmiths of all experience levels will give us a “taste” of what they do in five minutes or less. Live music is an integral part of the mix, with the likes of Super64 playing some jaunty sets & providing musical accompaniment to any poet so desiring. Want to join in the fun? Make sure to get on the list! Find me early in the evening or get in touch beforehand.

Freewrite Tuesdays at Sub Rosa
Sub Rosa Bakery
620 N. 25th St., RVA 23223
Tuesdays, 10:30-11:30am-ish
Don’t let your writing get lost in the busyness of the season! Resolve to spend some quality time with your muse every week with us. This group’s purpose is to create a cozy and informal venue to freewrite and converse-- we believe writing doesn't have to be a solitary sport, and that you never know what inspiration might walk through the door. Although we're open to specialized topics and sharing, there is no formal critique or workshop agenda— simply show up & be ready to write!

As mentioned above, 2016 is already shaping up to be a grand year for poetry in the River City! Not only will we be back at taZa on January 22 for our regularly scheduled open mic night, but we’ll also have our first Poetry Happy Hour of 2016 at Firehouse on January 28. Look for the return of more old faves later in the spring!

In other mid-winter around-town news, keep an eye out for poetic goings on at
Poe’s Birthday Bash on Jan. 16, and a brand-sparkling new literary event partnership between the James River Writers and Poe Museum at Patrick Henry Pub on February 11.

I’ll say no more here, leaving anticipation to build til after the holidays. In the meanwhile, have a fabulous final month of 2015. However and whatever you celebrate, may it be leavened with love & inspiration!

Yours in poetry,

Joanna
