Blog: ‘We need a private international law system that responds to the interests of Africa’

Currently, private international law - a specialised branch of law which resolves cases between private persons or companies which have an element of conflicting foreign law - has no real place in Africa yet. But with the increasing international trade with Africa, there is a growing need for more scholarly attention and efforts to generate a private international law system that responds to the socio-economic, cultural, and political interests of countries of the continent, writes Asser researcher Dr Chukwuma Okoli. Local high school students snap photos of The Hague for Human Rights Day

To commemorate Human Rights Day on December 10, the Asser Institute in collaboration with Humanity House and the Visual Human Rights project, invited forty high school students from The Hague to participate in the workshop “Human rights visualised.” The workshop included a range of activities under the guidance of Asser researcher Dr Sofia Stolkand photographer Hoessein Alkisaei (Visual Human Rights). [Interview] Aung San Suu Kyi to defend Myanmar before the ICJ in Gambia’s Rohingya genocide case

On December 11, Nobel peace prize laureate and Myanmar’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi defend ed Myanmar in an extraordinary case at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Suu Kyi led the legal defence team of her country against charges of genocide against the Buddhist state's minority Rohingya Muslims.
