The Secret to Sustaining Happiness

India MeCow

Me in pajamas. Cow. India.

Many years ago, I was sitting on the floor of an ashram in India, wearing what looked (to the westernized me at least) a lot like pajamas.

Our lesson that day was about happiness - how to find it, how to hold onto it.

Our teacher explained, "People will fight so hard to get rid of pain, suffering. But when it comes to joy, they think it should just come to them and stay all by itself."

Since that day, I have never taken my own happiness for granted.

I have read and studied techniques to feel more joy, and to make my joyful feelings last.

One of my favorite techniques is to simply notice what that makes me happy as I go about my day.

Often they are such little things - the good morning chirp of my bird, or my tortoise's eager face hoping for a tasty mealworm treat.

A steaming cup of chai, a fun find at the local resale shop - this is the stuff of my "everyday happy."

By hanging on to each happy feeling and making it last, I can almost hopscotch my way through my day from one "happy" to another.

This, I now truly believe, is the stuff sustaining happiness - and in time abiding joy - is made of.

And if I can build a happy life out of many tiny happy moments, I truly believe you can too!

With great respect and love,

Shannon

Me. Pearl.

Hi! So good to meet you here!

To learn more about my recovery story, I invite you to read "Beating Ana: how to outsmart your eating disorder and take your life back." In this book I share all the things I did to recover.

While writing "Beating Ana," I also founded MentorCONNECT, the first global eating disorders nonprofit mentoring community.

My newest book, "Love & Feathers," focuses on the power of animal mentors in our lives. Look for it later this year!
