Drowsy driving

Drowsy driving is dangerous driving. A lack of sleep, caused by a time change, can affect thinking, decision-making, and alertness. As such, the number of car crashes spikes each year after Daylight Saving Time.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, when your sleep-wake schedule is shifted, as in the case with the clock change, your circadian rhythm is severely impacted. Circadian rhythms follow a 24-hour cycle. They are physical, mental, and behavioral processes that respond primarily to light and dark. An example of a light-related circadian rhythm is the typical fashion in which humans sleep at night and are awake during the day.

Review the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration tips to drive alert:

▪ Getting adequate sleep on a daily basis. Experts urge drivers get a minimum of seven to eight hours of sleep per night.
▪ Before the start of a long car trip, get a good night’s sleep, or you could put your entire family and others at risk.
▪ Avoid drinking any alcohol before driving. Consumption of alcohol interacts with sleepiness to increase drowsiness and impairment.
▪ Always check your prescription and over-the-counter medication labels to see if drowsiness could result from their use. If you take medications that could cause drowsiness as a side effect, use public transportation or find an alternative to getting behind the wheel.
▪ If you drive, avoid driving during the peak sleepiness periods (midnight – 6 a.m. and late afternoon). If you must drive during the peak sleepiness periods, stay vigilant for signs of drowsiness, such as crossing over roadway lines or hitting a rumble strip, especially if you’re driving alone.
