December 5th, 2017

It was announced this summer that the Liberal government plans to update Canada's citizenship guide. Included in the substantial revision is the removal of a section added in 2011 warning that certain "barbaric cultural practices" such as female genital mutilation (FGM) are crimes in Canada.

FGM permanently affects women physically, emotionally, socially and psychologically and it is illegal in Canada.

However, there have been reports of Canadian girls being taken overseas to have the procedure done and also of doctors being brought into Canada from other countries in order to perform the procedure here. Canadian border patrol officers have even been advised of the particular tools and instruments to be on lookout for.

Michelle Rempel Responds:

Hon. MP Michelle Rempel has been an outspoken Member on important justice issues affecting women, such as the plight of the Yazidi people and the fight against gender-based violence. She has also been leading the charge against the removal of the FGM warnings from the Citizenship Guide.

Please click the viewer to the right to watch MP Rempel's video explaining this issue and the implications of these changes to the guide.

MP Rempel has also used her position in the House of Commons to urge the government to withdraw their decision to not warn newcomers about Canada's nonacceptance of such practices.

How You Can Help:

1) Pray:

Please pray that our leaders would have wisdom when dealing with cultural practices like FGM that have no place in Canada. Please pray that they would be wise and effective in combatting these practices and prohibiting the act from being performed in Canada or on Canadian citizens. Please pray for MP Michelle Rempel as she continues to stand for what is right.

2) Sign the Petition:

Please sign the petition opposing the removal of warnings about FGM in Canada's citizenship guide. Find the petition here.

Please don't forget to share it with your friends.

3) Send a Quick E-mail:

Please take 5 minutes to send an e-mail to your MP, the Minister of Immigration, Prime Minister Trudeau and MP Michelle Rempel, letting them know that you want to see the government help fight gender-based violence in Canada which includes leaving the section about FGM in the citizenship guide.

In your e-mail, please ask our government to get back to you and let you know how they plan to address this situation.
