Dear small business owner,

The busy fall season has begun, and I hope it has been a productive and healthy one for you and your family! We are delighted to make some important announcements in the October 2019 edition (#70) of the monthly NewPath Consulting newsletter.

Two new highlights from September:

▪ The Google Data Studio team has reviewed and approved our Wild Apricot Reports Manager for general use in Google Data Studio. WARM is one of over 150 partner data connectors now available to all Google Data Studio customers. The Wild Apricot Reports Manager (aka WARM) is NewPath Consulting's free custom reporting and visualization solution for Wild Apricot administrators who want an increased level of reporting flexibility and analytical power. We published a "lessons learned" article aimed at Google Data Studio developers that was picked up by Google's social media team and redistributed to over 1 million followers.

▪ Greater Fort Worth Builders Association is the latest Wild Apricot redesign customer. We worked with GFWBATX over the past several months to completely redesign their website.
Greater Fort Worth Builders Association is the latest Wild Apricot redesign customer. We worked with GFWBATX over the past several months to completely redesign their website.

This project took about 3 months from start to finish and included the following:

▪ Selection of a new theme, custom colors tied to the newly designed logo, new page templates with new artwork
▪ Completely rewritten and redesigned content and navigation
▪ A brand new members only section with value added content for members
▪ A color-coded events calendar
▪ Migration of the new design to the production website keeping all existing database content in place

Migration of the new design to the production website keeping all existing database content in place

The production website continued to take event registrations and membership profile updates/renewals while the the website was set to "under construction". The migration took about 2 weeks to complete.

Cool Article of the Month

You might think the typical entrepreneur is a young person launching a hot new tech startup, clad in a hoodie and coding from their parents’ garage. But that’s just one of the many myths Freshbooks uncovered when they researched America’s self-employed workforce.

According to FreshBooks’ 2019 Self-Employment in America Report, there are 15 million full-time, self-employed people living across the U.S. Roughly 3 million of them are aged 65 and over. This didn't surprise us since we work with many customers who are in retirement age but are actively running organizations and businesses.

The Designer Paradox

The comic below illustrates the challenges of a user interface designer (UX), but it can easily be generalized to any design work. Sometimes what we think a customer wants is not necessarily what they actually need. The challenge is in communicating those assumptions at the start and realigning scope expectations to the reality of time and budget.
