Public Allies Day of Service: MLK DAY: Youth Dialogue on race, culture, DETROIT Identify in leadership

MLK 2015 SAVE the DATE

At the time of his assassination in 1968, Dr. King was in the midst of planning a Poor People's March, integral to a campaign to unify and take action on behalf of people living in poverty.

It is imperative that youth & participants come to a clearer understanding of what this means and how it relates to them today.

The day’s theme will help them to discover, discern, and direct their actions to help them on their quest as NEW-NOW-NEXT community leaders as well as to cultivate meaningful cross cultural discussion on current social & civic issues.

Youth will be able to responsibly and truthfully examine the ways in which organizational policies, practices, attitudes, and initiatives are or are not being wholly inclusive towards people of color which was the basis of the Civil Rights Movement that, unfortunately, currently continues to impact our society.

Youth will come away with four appreciations:

1) The Civil Rights Movement wasn’t just a movement to benefit African Americans only; it was for all people of Color,

2) Civil Rights activists included people from all backgrounds: race, religious, ethnicity, sexual preference, social and economic.

3) The understanding of the power of the media in shaping public opinion and how it influenced many to act in support of racial and economic justice and how it could be use today to tell our story now.

4) With knowledge comes responsibility—youth will be given opportunities to continue the work of empowerment in their communities.

DILLA YOUTH DAY DETROIT 2015 SEEKING SPONSORS

The Foundation of Women in Hip Hop is seeking sponsorship for Dilla Youth Day Sunday February 8, 2015 at The Charles H Wright Museum in Detroit.

Participation can include but is not limited to one or more of the following:

•Hosting a hands-on open workstation

•Providing in-kind support

•Providing financial support

•Providing financial support to purchase food for the event.

•Providing financial support to provide safe transportation for youth to and from the event..

•Providing financial support to compensate workshop facilitators.

•Providing materials such as computers, arts supplies, sound equipment

•Attending with your youth group.

The Format for the day:

Workshops from 12 noon until 5pm and then performances from 6-8pm.

This year we've partnered with The Charles H Wright Museum on this particular day because J Dilla is a significant African American Musical Producer who created the genre Neo-Soul and revolutionized the sound of 90's Hip Hop, which accelerated the careers of successful Artists such as Erykah Badu, Common, Talib Kweli, DeLaSoul, Janet Jackson, and influenced many others up to our current generation. Dilla Youth Day is a highlight for young people to become more excited about celebrating African American History Month through the process of participating in and leading hands on engagement in fun educational activities while recognizing a modern homegrown figure. This particular event highlights the Museum's current initiatives of investment in science education such as the children's exhibition: "Inspiring Minds: African Americans in Science and Technology" and monthly children's event: "Science Saturdays".

There is no cost to youth nor youth groups who choose to participate. It is a wonderful opportunity to support Michigan young people and it is a wonderful opportunity to promote the work of various community youth groups doing great work in the city to a very receptive audience of parents, educators, artists, community, and of course youth.

EVENT INFO DETAILS:

This day is all about beat making and celebrating the DIY Hip Hop Culture!

Art + Culture + Hip Hop + Technology + Education + FUN =

DillaYouthDayDet

♥ Performances by Youth from: Urban Strings Youth Orchestra, The Raiz Up Youth, Hardcore Detroit & Motor City Rockers, & King Lynxx.

Hosted by The Foundation of Women in Hip Hop

YOUTH WILL LEARN HOW TO MAKE BEATS!

Mobile Maker Space: In keeping with the DIY spirit of the Dilla style of Music Production, the culture of Mechanical Ingenuity of Detroit, & the removal of Arts & Culture from Public Education, How do we give more opportunities to young people to become makers and learn practical skills that can be applied to their own creative process? This event, based on the Disco Tech model is a fun, compelling hands-on program that will inspire young learners in the STEM disciplines.

(STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, & Math) by connecting youth to technologies in order to help them realize the creative potential of cutting-edge hardware and software tools. Also, we're connecting Detroit's Best Music Producers & Community Leaders with youth to teach them not only the techniques and equipment but also the history of the Dilla Production Style in order to preserve this culture of Hip Hop.

About The Foundation of Women in Hip Hop

foundation email banner logo sm

We founded a collective and event called "The Foundation" dedicated to Celebrating Women in Hip Hop to raise awareness of Women Artists, Emcees, Producers, Film Makers, B-Girls, Graffiti Writers, etc. that's been consistently going strong since May 2009.

We support each other by meeting to organize, workshop, strategize, discuss issues, strengthen skills through artist development, attend each others events, collaborate on each others' projects, and connect as Family.

Encouraging freedom of expression, healthy competition, independent thought, & positive self-identity, we focus on redefining the vital role of Women in Hip Hop.
Our mission is to educate and empower the community using Hip Hop as a medium to share love through the arts, inspire change and growth, build leadership, and influence the perceptions and roles of Women for current and future generations, shifting the culture to a healthier environment.

The Foundation brings international, national and local girls and Women together in Detroit through music, dance, visual & performing arts, fashion, film, with emphasis on Hip Hop specific media: Open Mic, Freestyle Cipher, Graffiti, to present a series of showcases, performances and workshops supporting, and creating empowering images of Women.

Accomplishments of our collective: we've hosted panels & workshops & performed @ Ohio State University, Michigan State University, University of Michigan, Wayne State University, Hip Hop Congress, African World Fest, Cranbrook Institute & had the honor of performing @ Grammy nominated Motown Recording Artist KEM's "Mack & Third LIVE: A Call to Service" event.
