Summertime and the Livin’ is Easy

Well, we’ve noticed it is definitely summer! Hot time in the city. Time to kick back, relax, enjoy. Oh yes, and eat and drink. On the current Kansas City restaurant scene, there are both new and not so new places to indulge your culinary fancies and we’re going to tell you about just a few of them right now.

Try Some Place New

It’s a perfect time of the year to eat a little lighter (if you so choose) and one of the newest places to do that is at A1 Sushi and Hibachi, a brand new restaurant at 119th and Lamar. It’s already a gathering spot for those who want top notch (that’s the A1 part) sushi, sashimi, or a hibachi experience (seating up to 17 people plus a high chair). It’s also cool that this place is offering not only exotic seafood specialties like sea urchin, red bream or belly tuna, but they have other Asian favorites on the menu too – phad Thai, curries, ribs, tempura, and teriyaki. We tell you more on their page in the Restaurant Guide.

If you’re a slow adopter, go to this link for a little encouragement. Take quick advantage of this incentive to help you have a taste of something new – the offer is valid until July 31.

Another “New” Place

Big changes at Bo Lings on 91st & Metcalf! They’ve moved their iconic restaurant across the parking lot – their new address is 8973 Metcalf. There’s more good news – they serve some dim sum items every day with a full dim sum menu on Saturday and Sunday. There are two private dining rooms that can seat 15 patrons each or combine for 30. Whether there’s one or thirty in your party, it’s easier to party here with the authentic, delicious Chinese food for which these home-grown restaurants are known.

Big News for Oenophiles

Every year the Wine Spectator Magazine announces its coveted awards to restaurants which have exceptional wine lists and knowledgeable sommeliers. Kansas City has 17 restaurants which received awards for “Best of Award of Excellence.” We offer congratulations to all – and are especially proud of Pierpont’s at Union Station, Fogo de Chao and JJ’s Restaurant in the Plaza, Final Cut Steakhouse at the Hollywood Casino and Story in Prairie Village. Go here to see the complete list of these winners in Kansas City.

New Burger

New and notable at JJ’s Restaurant is the JJ Fondizi Burger, a creation developed for the Blended Burger Project™ which runs through July 31st. This is a national program that strives to make burgers healthier and more sustainable with better taste. JJ’s take is a blend of ground ribeye and tenderloin with wild mushroom duxelles, cumin, garlic and topped with Red Rock, a blue veined cheddar from Wisconsin, bacon, scallion aioli, red onion and pickled jalapeños. Now that’s a burger! (Which may or may not stay on the menu, so you’d best rush in now.)allion aioli, red onion and pickled jalapeños. Now that’s a burger – she’s succeeded on all fronts, believe us.

New Al Fresco

You’re probably already a fan of the Classic Cup for outdoor dining and people watching. Since 1977, this place has been the place to be on the Plaza. But their best, new, cool news is that they’ve redone their back deck. More umbrellas, more shade, more open space, and brand new fencing – which lets you watch the folks walking by, providing even more entertainment. It’s the perfect breakfast place for their famous pancakes or their croque madame or even their migas. Oh, they also serve lunch and dinner, equally fab, under their shady blue umbrellas.
