Reg and Jen - Southwest pack up

Hello Paddlers

We hope you are all well and keeping positive and active.

It certainly was a different end to our kayaking season as we closed in mid-March. However, this meant there was post-season pack up work to do in Southwest Tasmania. It was a tough start to isolation for us (Reg and Jen) with a week in the beautiful Tasmania wilderness, but someone had to do it!

We are feeling grateful for the plethora of beautiful and large open spaces in Tasmania for essential exercise (walking, cycling and kayaking). If you’re unable to get out kayaking at the moment and want to keep fit for your summer on the water, check out Reg’s tips for Preparing for Kayaking Expeditions.

With recent announcements of easing of restrictions across Australia we hope to be welcoming visitors back to Tasmania next summer. Whilst things do remain uncertain now, we really want you to keep dreaming and planning your next Tasmanian adventure so have adjusted our cancellation policy during COVID-19 (outlined below).

In the meantime, the fantastic annual Tasmanian Breath of Fresh Air (BOFA) Film Festival is now a free online festival available until this Sunday, 17th May. Find out how to watch below. For more viewing, check out Reg’s five favourite online kayaking links and further inspiration for your next Tasmanian holiday.

See you on the water

Breath of Fresh Air (BOFA) film festival

The Tasmanian team at BOFA was gutted that their 2020 BOFA Film Festival had to be cancelled after 9 months of planning with brilliant films from 17 different countries. But, they are now proud to present the entire 2020 festival as a free online event available until May 17.

For some great viewing, sign up through the BOFA website and get access to all 19 movies. Make sure you catch the two Tasmanian films Rogue Waves (including surfing in Southwest Tasmania) and Women of the Island.

COVID-19 Cancellation Policy

With Australia starting to open up, we are hopeful that all our kayaking tours and expeditions will go ahead as scheduled next summer. All our tours are small group and explore wide open wilderness spaces. We will also be adjusting our processes to ensure we follow new best practices for hygiene.

Due to the current uncertainty we have updated our cancellation policy to help you continue to plan your next Tasmanian kayaking adventure.

▪ If any tour is cancelled due to COVID-19 travel restrictions into Tasmania or from your home state, we will offer a full refund, including refunding deposits paid for multi-day expeditions.
▪ Full payment for multi-day expeditions is not required until travel restrictions have been lifted and your expedition is confirmed. Once your expedition has been confirmed, full payment is due 60 days prior to the departure date.

Reg's 5 favourite kayaking links

When Reg is not actually paddling, he is often found streaming kayaking videos. Lately this has been how he has been getting his daily kayaking fix! If you are looking for some good training videos or just to watch some adrenalin filled kayaking, check out his five favourite links below:

1. NSW Sea Kayak Club
Great basic instructional videos

2. Paddle Australia - YouTube Channel
More good instructional videos to help with technique

3. SeaKayak TV
Sea kayaking adventures around the world as well as great tips

4. Ask BOM
Answers all those questions you may have on the weather (so you know when to paddle), and some you hadn't thought of yet!

5. Beau Miles
Probably his favourite page. Beau is an Outdoor Ed teacher at Monash Uni with a doctorate in Philosophy. He started as a sea kayaker and now just does all things odd. Highly watchable great little videos.
