The bird survey for our March Working Party was a delight! Despite the drizzle, six of us were able to see/hear and identify 23 different different species! Particular highlights were the grey wagtail (notable for its sunny yellow colouring and likely to be nesting nearby) and the tiny firecrest in bright spring plumage that we encountered at close quarters. The full list is:
Blue Tit; Great Tit; Long-tailed Tit
Blackbird; Song Thrush
Robin; Wren; Chiffchaff
Goldfinch; Siskin
Goldcrest; Firecrest
Grey Wagtail
Nuthatch; Treecreeper
Rook; Carrion Crow; Jackdaw; Jay
Green Woodpecker
Stock Dove; Wood Pigeon
Mallard
We definitely saw/heard more as a group than I would have noticed on my own. And the birdsong in the strip of the Copse north of Bristol Gardens was at full throttle!
If you're any good at wildlife photography, or simply capture a lucky shot, it would be lovely to populate our webpages with more information - please let me know if you have anything to share. (I have neither the skill nor the technology to photograph birds, so am grateful to my sister for use of her photograph of a treecreeper on a tree in Surrey. Look for one moving upwards on the trunk of our larger trees in Brandy Hole Copse.)
