Last month the Ryerson University Student Union's board of directors unanimously voted to ban students from forming the Ryerson for Life club (a pro-life club). In a statement the Student Union said that it, “opposes...groups, meetings, or events that promote misogynist views towards woman and ideologies that promote gender inequity, challenges women’s right to bodily autonomy, or justifies sexual assault”.
The Ryerson for Life club rejects the accusation of misogyny and has asked for further explanation as to why their club has been banned. Ryerson students were first rejected in the fall semester and have been in an ongoing battle since.
As a campus club Ryerson for Life would seek to:
▪ inform the Ryerson community on issues that pertain to a human being’s right to life, such as abortion and euthanasia;
▪ train and equip members with the knowledge to engage in dialogue on these issues;
▪ direct Ryerson students to resources that support women in crisis pregnancies or those who have had (or have been involved in) abortions and are seeking help and healing.
We believe that Ryseron's actions are a direct breech of students' freedom of conscience rights as laid out in the Canadian Charter of Rights. We encourage you to support the Ryerson for Life club by following the action points below.
