Doing Good

Someone is casting out demons in Jesus’ name who isn’t part of Jesus’ own circle, and the disciples want him stopped. They appeal to Jesus, as Joshua did to Moses about the elders who prophesied without official authorization. Like Moses, Jesus refuses to see this as a threat. Jesus welcomes good being done in his name, even when it is not under his control. The circle we form around Jesus’ word must be able to value good being done in ways we wouldn’t do it, by people we can’t keep tabs on.

September 23: A discussion of the book Trouble I’ve Seen: Changing the Way the Church Views Racism by Drew Hart. The central thesis of the book is these two sentences from the book itself: “Just as Jesus defied Herod and then continued on with the work of liberating healing and justice-filled shalom, so too must Christians subvert every way that our society’s racial hierarchy is allowed to exist. This subversion must happen first and foremost in the the church.” Even if you haven’t read the book, the discussion may interest you. All are welcome!

Walking the Bible: Book of Faith

book of faith

Thursdays, October 4 & 11; 1 & 7 pm

When you read the Bible, do you wonder what the landscape looked like? How high are the mountains? What was the Dead Sea like when Lot’s wife looked back? Where is the Reed Sea that Moses crossed? Here is your opportunity to see what the land looks like from the comfort of our own adult learning room.
Our Book of Faith Bible study takes us on a journey by land through the five books of Moses with a video that takes us from the birthplace of civilization (Mesopotamia) to Mt. Ararat to Harran to Egypt, and then back to the Promised Land. It took the Israelites 40 years but we will do it in six sessions, led by Pastor Stephen.
