Kingston Transition meets online Thursday January 20th at 9am

All are welcome to join our monthly zoom get together on Thursday January 20th from 9-10am. Please click here for the link. You can join by landline by dialing 1 646 558 8656 Meeting ID: 850 7355 7696.
It is almost a year since we started meeting online (with a couple of in-person meetings in the summer) and all agree it is difficult to make and keep personal connections without the in-person events that create real connections. All Transition Town groups however agree that we cycle through high and low activity periods, and it is important to keep the flame burning, because the energy will return. That is especially true in Kingston, where there are so many initiatives that dovetail with Transition thinking, and where there are many potential partners and projects to support. So join us and share your vision.

Another Kingstonian Update

After the in-person public meeting of the Common Council on Wednesday 1/12, it looks like there will be a repeat vote by the Common Council concerning the partial abandonment of Fair St extension, either later this month or, more likely, at the next Council meeting on February 1st. Not surprisingly the supporters of the street abandonment and the Kingstonian project in general outnumbered the opponents at this gathering at the GW Elementary School, 56 out of 70 speakers. Many of the opponents did not want to attend a large public meeting at the height of the Omicron spread, and had been demanding an online event - but this was not offered. Written comments will be accepted by the City Clerk's office emtinti@kingston-ny.gov until 4pm Friday 1/14 Currently the majority of written comments support the Fair Street extension abandonment and the Kingstonian.

Why Transition Kingston opposes the Kingstonian

Transition Kingston has consistently opposed the Kingstonian project. We do not understand why Kingston, which is rightly proud of its silver level Climate Smart certification, allows this development, based on 20th century design and technology, to go forward in the third decade of the 21st century. It is out of date before the first shovel is raised. The NYS Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act of 2019 demands that developers be held to building code standards that promise low- to zero-carbon emissions for the life of the building. The Kingstonian will need expensive retrofitting almost as soon as it is built. There are many other reasons to object to this monstrosity that will do nothing to alleviate the housing crisis in the city, but this is one that flies in the face of what the city is supporting with its other hand, such as going after the Climate Smart gold certification and the Dover Kohl initiative.
