We probably know the old saying “practice makes perfect.” But how we practice is key to improving a physical skill, whether it’s playing an instrument, maintaining aligned posture or walking on uneven ground. Practice involves repeating an action many times and, as you know from class, we tap into the benefits of including variations in our learning process. This short TED-Ed video by Annie Bosler and Don Greene highlights how practice changes our brain to enable us to improve our action.
Several suggestions here for improving practice sessions, and therefore, learning.
1) minimize distractions (focus your attention )
2) start out slowly or in slow motion
3) include rest periods
4) use imagination and visualization -- practice in your brain
If you’ve taken Awareness Through Movement® classes, you know that our movement lessons incorporate these same ideas. Check it out here.
