WHAT A ROLL WE ARE ALL ON. Maybe it's hard to tell just how optimistic we are here at Sane Energy, given that we're often writing about nasty stuff like pipelines and corrupt agencies.

But here's what we see happening: The environmental movement is not just enlarging and strengthening in size, savvy and force, we're joining with other social justice movements in a way that gives us a real sense of hope. A larger slice of the world is beginning to connect the dots between the issues of climate change, racism, corporate abuse, and other injustices. Tomorrow, these factions will join together (for 2 rallies in one day!) that take a stand against all our common grievances. Don't sit this one out.

Monday, Jan. 26th: Dual Rallies @ Noon and 4:30pm

MONDAY AT NOON: Emergency Rally against the TPP
Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations are coming to a hotel in NYC and the following day, Congress will hold hearings on legislation to Fast Track TPP. The TPP is a game-changer – it will set all of our work back for decades. TPP threatens our food, jobs, environment, medicines, animal welfare, financial regulations, internet freedom and more. If passed it could supersede the NYS fracking ban. Please make every effort to join this rally and spread the word to others. Bring noisemakers so the sounds of resistance outside the hotel are loud enough to be heard by corporate negotiators inside. Meet at the Sheraton Times Square, 811 Seventh Avenue @ 52nd Street. More info here.

MONDAY AT 4:30: MORAL MONDAYS COME TO NYC
What connects the TPP, fracking, racial and economic inequality, corporate personhood, food insecurity, and a push to build KXL in a time of climate change? These injustices are not just unhealthy for people and planet, they're immoral. This week, the powerful Moral Mondays movement arrives in NYC, to call for equitable education, living wages, fair taxation, corporate accountability, and a healthy climate. Meet at the Plaza at Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building 125th Street at Adam Clayton Powell Blvd. Map/subway here. More info here.

REV

REV (Reforming the Energy Vision) is an initiative that will determine our future energy choices, and it is crucial that we all be well informed in our comments. Unfortunately, the information the agency has released about REV is pretty indecipherable, even for well-informed energy geeks. For more info, click here to read our post, "WTF is REV?" Happily, there are two opportunities to be briefed in layperson's terms:

Wednesday, Jan. 28th @ 8pm: REV Briefing Call

Anthony Giancatarino, Director of Policy and Strategy for The Center for Social Inclusion, will host a training to prepare us for the REV hearings. Call in number: 302-202-1108, Code: 999246. Can't make it to this briefing? Check out this online resource from our friends at AGREE.

Monday, Feb. 2nd @ 6:30: REV Briefing Meeting

Additionally, an in-person briefing will take place as a prelude to the regular NYC Grassroots Alliance meeting on February 2nd (the night before the NYC hearing). Click here for details. Can't make it to this briefing? Check out this online resource from our friends at AGREE.

City Council Reso Against Port Ambrose Introduced!

You know what also gives us hope? The new New York City Council. Last election brought a flood of progressives into office and removed a recalcitrant Speaker and a gas-happy Mayor. Things can change! The new Council is so active with positive bills that we can hardly keep up with their hearing schedule. In the works now, following the 80x50 climate plan (a proposal to reduce greenhouse gases 80% by 2050) are a frack waste bill, several Smart City and renewable energy bills, a reso against Indian Point, and now, Resolution No. 549, calling on Governor Cuomo to veto Port Ambrose LNG. Make sure YOUR Council rep signs onto Reso #549!

The Infrastructure Report: NED Open House Begins

Last week the Infrastructure Report covered the Constitution and AIM pipelines, and Seneca Lake – all projects the DEC can stop. This week, we're focusing on the NED (Northeast Energy Direct) pipeline, a 4-state project that's in the early stages of its FERC review process (and already getting major resistance). Read all about it here. The "Open House" informational meetings begin in early February. The builder, Kinder Morgan, has been changing the route following activist push-back, and residents along the NY/MA border will want to remain particularly alert and informed.

Having a hard time keeping up with all the comment deadlines and hearings? Us too. So we've launched a new service: Click this link any time you're afraid you've missed a date.

HR-161: It's baaaack! The killer pipeline bill won't die.

faster

Sometimes, the oil and gas goons can be just as relentless as we are: In May 2013 we reported on HR-1900, a bill that would require the processing of pipelines in an expedited timeframe (because as far as they're concerned, FERC isn't rubber-stamping FAST ENOUGH). Like some Fatal Attraction wannabe, this bill refuses to die. Sponsored by the same rep (Pompeo) it's back again with a new bill number. Now known as HR-161 (though we refer to it as the Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill! bill) it has once again passed the House.

You know what to do:
Write to Senator Schumer here
Or give a call at (202) 224-6542.

Write to Senator Gillabrand here.
Or call (202) 224-4451.

Let's kill this horrendous bill, once and for all.
