Rene Francisco é um dos artistas contemporâneos mais importantes de Cuba, é conhecido pelo seu trabalho experimental que utiliza a arte como meio de exploração e de transformação social. A maioria, produzida numa variedade de meios, toca em temas sociológicos e políticos. Trabalha para promover a arte conceptual e o desenvolvimento comunitário na sua Cuba natal e foi fundamental para influenciar em uma geração de artistas cubanos como professor de arte no Instituto Superior de Arte.

Entrevista de Sabina Wlandis ao artista Rene Francisco:

De que forma sente ter influenciado as novas gerações de artistas cubanos?
"Um acontecimento que sempre se repetiu ao longo da minha carreira foi regressar a Cuba após longas e curtas viagens e transmitir tudo o que adquiri e vivi. Penso que a influência mais incitante foi a de soprar o espírito de um rigor no trabalho e a necessidade de companheirismo para construir algo singular e a nível de alguns dos paradigmas com que fui formado e cresci."

Emprega uma utilização diversificada de meios artísticos com amplas características estilísticas, qual é o elemento que une o seu trabalho? Quais são os temas recorrentes?
"Sou um artista aberto à curiosidade cognitiva, a não me enclausurar ou encerrar-me de forma estandardizada, desde muito cedo tenho praticado a apropriação de temas remotos, de alguma maneira clássicos, como algo que pode sempre despertar novidade, e que esta possível invenção deve fluir de um estado emocional que me multiplicaria em diferentes faces. Acho que as minhas recorrências estão no copulativo, em que se relaciona e multiplica na solidão que se abre e recebe todo o contaminante com igual alegria.
Como dizia Baudelaire "tudo se responde".

Que influências têm desempenhado o papel mais importante no seu trabalho?
"Teria de fazer uma lista muito longa. Há uma enorme influência no sangue, nos traços de fusão familiar. Depois há a literatura, a poesia, a escrita de ensaios, a germinação em Borges, Lezama Lima e Pessoa e claro, a escola cubana que Flavio Garciandia concretizou, onde há o trabalho em rigor, a grande pintura, a grande arte, o rigor do conceptual e há Beuys. Beuys é uma influência determinante, e depois os meus alunos, com os quais aprendi muito, a renovar-me e a desaparecer entre eles."

Qual é a sua visão da arte contemporânea cubana agora desde de uma perspectiva internacional e num contexto internacional?
"É difícil responder a isto quando nos últimos três anos, pus os pés fora de Cuba. A arte cubana mais visível encontra-se numa grande encruzilhada, por um lado um movimento político que repete velhas frustrações e um movimento forçado para o exterior que pouco a pouco a diluirá nas meadas do progresso pessoal, familiar, na vida prática e no arrancamento, no terrível e favorável mercado. Se reune forças fraternas, creio que poderá fortalecer um caminho de integração e invenção num novo terreno, muito distante dos caminhos que a geração dos anos 60 ou 80 tomou face a um epsilon que se bifurca para o internacional e para a criação de momentos ainda incertos. A arte cubana é como um poliedro cheio de desejos e na saída do seu orfanato."

Rene Francisco is one of Cuba´s most important contemporary artists, is known for his experimental work which uses art as a means of social exploration and transformation. Most, produced in a variety of media, touches on sociological and political themes. He works to promote conceptual art and community development in his native Cuba and has been seminal in influencing a generation of Cuban artists as art professor at the Instituto Superior de Arte.

Sabina Wlandis' interview with artist Rene Francisco:

In what ways do you feel you have influenced new generations of Cuban artists?
"An event that has always been repeated throughout my career has been returning to Cuba after long and short trips and transmitting everything I have learned and experienced from these. I think that the most inciting influence has been to solicit a spirit of rigor in the artwork and the need for fellowship in building something unique and in line with some of the paradigms with which I was formed."

You employ a diverse use of artistic media with broad stylistic characteristics, what is the element that links your work? What are the recurring themes?
"I am an artist open to cognitive curiosity; I refuse to cloister or lock myself into a standardized practice. From a very early age I exercised appropriating remote, but somehow classic themes, as something that can always arouse novelty. And in this way, the invention would flow from my emotional state and multiply in different facets. I think the recurrences in my work are reproduced in what is connected and multiplied throughout the work. In a state that is open and receives everything polluting with equal joy.
As Baudelaire said, “everything is answered”.

Which influences have played the biggest part in your work?
"I would have to make a very long list. There is a huge influence coming from blood - family traits. Then there are literature, poetry, essays. Then there are seeds in Borges, Lezama Lima and Pessoa and of course, the Cuban school that Flavio Garciandia materialized, where the rigorous work is found; the great painting, the great art, the rigor of the conceptual. And there is Beuys. Beuys is a determining influence… and then my students, with whom I have learnt a lot, renewing myself and disappearing among them."

What is you view of contemporary Cuban art now from an international perspective and in an international context?
"It is difficult to answer this when in the last three years I have not set foot outside of Cuba. The most visible Cuban art is at a great crossroads, on the one hand a political movement that repeats old frustrations and a forced movement towards the exterior that little by little will dilute into a maze of personal and family progress, in practical life and the uprooted, in the terrible and favorable market. If it brings together fraternal forces, I think it could strengthen a path of integration and invention in a new field. This would be very different from the paths that the generation of the 60s or 80s experienced in the face of a fork between the international and the creation of moments which are still uncertain. Cuban art is like a polyhedron full of desires and on its way out of its orphanage."
