SOLAR ECLIPSE

It's a big deal!

Oconee County is directly in the path of totality, and we expect a large influx of people coming to the area to view the solar eclipse later this month.

Lodging options throughout the county are almost entirely booked for that weekend, but we've heard Mountain Rest Campground still has room to camp. And if you hurry, you might be able to find lodging via our website for Saturday or Monday nights.

Here's an opportunity to stay and view at a summer camp in Mountain Rest: "Camp Chatuga is in a prime location to experience the TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE coming up on Monday, August 21st! We are offering rustic accommodations for families, individuals and groups from Sunday, August 20th, through Tuesday, August 22nd. Join us for this once-in-a-lifetime event. Lodging space is limited so call us right away at (864) 638-3728 for more information and pricing."

RECREATION

GREAT LAKE: Explore Lake Jocassee

A recent article by Ky Delany of Blue Ridge Outdoors describes ways to make the most of your visit to Lake Jocassee.

"It’s no wonder Jocassee Valley held a central place in Cherokee myths. Places like Jocassee inspire stories. Water tumbles off the sides of the mountains from rivers and countless unnamed creeks, all converging into a crystal clear lake. The lake’s surface reflects mile after mile of pristine shoreline steeped with jagged rock formations, fading into uninterrupted mountain vistas for as far as the eye can see. The area is also a hotspot for diversity. Some of the rarest plants and animals in the world make this lush gorge home." Read more
