The reticulated veins seem to hold well throughout the summer. New growth flushes during the summer are a bright red and often show reticulation as well. Fall color ranges from bright red to red purple. I would expect 'Frosted Purple' to reach 8-10 ft in 10 years. Give 'Frosted Purple' protection from the hot afternoon sun for best growth and color. Found as a chance seedling from 'Purple Ghost' in 2003 by Talon Buchholz, 'Frosted Purple' resembles its parent, but has a lot more pink color in the reticulated veins in the purple leaves. The color is even brighter than 'Olsen's Frosted Strawberry'. | Acer shirasawanum 'Mr. Sun' | 'Mr. Sun' is a dwarf spreading full moon Japanese maple. The round shaped leaves have cupped leaves that result in pointed lobes which look like a child's drawing of a sun. The orange to red fall color draws on this lore as well. Give 'Mr. Sun' protection from the hot afternoon sun for best growth. | Cornus kousa 'Celestial Shadow' | Cornus kousa x 'Celestial Shadow' is a gorgeous Chinese dogwood hybrid with thick margins of creamy yellow variegation on a dark green leaf. The white blooms in early summer add quite a bit to this tree. ‘Celestial Shadow’ may reach 15 ft in height in 20 years. | Acer japonicum 'Fairy Lights' | Everyone loves the phenomenal fall colors of this Acer japonicum species. Intense fall colors that hold on for a few weeks longer than most Acer palmatums is why the Japanese often use the Acer japonicum in the landscape for fall color. Typically, most japonicum cultivars are a larger mid-sized tree. 'Fairy Lights' is a true dwarf growing slowly to reach about 5 ft by 4 ft in 10 years. 'Fairy Lights' is a selection from Yasmina Rare Plant Nursery in Australia. In the early spring, this dwarf unfolds its buds to reveal large bright green leaves that have a chartreuse colored eye in the palm of the leaf which radiates outward through the veins of each lobe. The leaves are heavily dissected, even more so than most typical Japanese maples making this tree remarkably ornamental. The name 'Fairy Lights' is aptly used for this selection because of its dwarf stature and its fall color of bright yellows, shocking reds, and rich oranges that infuse the leaf all at once. Protection from the hot afternoon sun will increase the length of this display of colors in autumn. Because of its size and shape and slow growth, 'Fairy Lights' is ideal for small planting in the landscape, fairy gardens, rock and conifer gardens, and container planting. | 'Calico' leafs out in the early spring as a bright peach in the early spring, maturing to a bright lime green on red stemmed new growth. In autumn, 'Calico' turns to a multitude of yellows, oranges and reds. The 'Calico' Japanese maple is excellent for small spaces as this mid-sized shrub form reaches 6 ft with vigor at a younger age, maturing to 8 ft in 15 years. | Acer palmatum 'Hupp's Dwarf' | ‘Hupp's Dwarf' is a very unique dwarf Japanese maple with a tightly layering habit with twisted leaves. This Japanese maple is very heat tolerant and can fit in nearly any space in the garden or landscape. Because of Hupp's Dwarf small size and unique habit 'Hupp's Dwarf' is ideal for fairy gardens, railroad gardens, rock gardens, and container planting. New growth flushes are a pink red over the rich green background. Autumn colors for this dwarf Japanese maple are bright oranges to reds. This tree reaches 4-6 ft in height 15 years. | Acer palmatum 'Tiny Stars' | 'Tiny Stars' is a new selection by Talon Buchholz that has rosey red tips in the early spring, on a tighter dense habit. We expect 'Tiny Stars' to reach 8-10 ft in height and width in 10 years. Fall color can range from orange to red. | Acer palmatum 'Shin hikasa' | Think of a tightly layered Japanese maple with shingle-like leaves that are variegated like 'Higasayama'. That crazy dwarf Japanese maple exists. It is 'Shin hikasa'. Like all "Higasayama-types", they do not variegate well for us in the cold frame or greenhouse. When you plant the Shin hikasa tree outside, you will see the variegation come through, more than likely the following spring. 'Shin hikasa' leafs out in the early spring with bright pink variegation overtop of green reticulated veins. As the summer approaches the leaves of Shin hikasa turn to cream, and then to white. Fall colors are oranges to reds. 'Shin hikasa' will get 4 to 5 ft in fifteen years in a dense tightly layered h | Acer palmatum 'Fred's Wild Dream' | Fred's Wild Dream' is a gorgeous selection by Talon Buchholz that is a cream Japanese maple with a pink-rose blush and lime-green reticulation that is outstanding. The reticulated variegation is outstanding and ghost-like. The colors are crazy and there is no wonder someone may have a wild dream about this tree. In the fall, 'Fred's Wild Dream' turns to a vibrant peach red. 'Fred's Wild Dream' is expected to reach 8-10 ft in height in 10 years. | Acer palmatum 'Tsuma gaki' | Acer palmatum 'Tsuma gaki' is simply an amazing Japanese maple. It leafs out in the early spring providing a dynamic contrast of large bright yellow leaves outlined in a deep purple red border on the tips of each lobe. It is for this reason that this tree's name is translated as "painted nails". During the late summer 'Tsuma gaki' often turns to a deep burgundy before turning to a bright crimson in the fall. Like most Japanese maples, it prefers protection from the hot afternoon sun in the southern United States, but can often handle full sun in other climates. 'Tsuma gaki' forms a rounded shape with horizontal branching reaching 10ft tall by 10ft wide in 15 years. This tree is great for a focal point or an accent planting. 'Tsuma gaki' brings that shock and awe factor to your garden. | Acer palmatum 'Little Sango' | 'Little Sango' is an excellent dwarf coral bark Japanese maple. 'Little Sango' leafs out as a bright chartreuse green turning bright yellow to orange in the fall. 'Little Sango' provides great winter interest as the bark increases intensity of bright red in the fall. This Little Sango coral bark Japanese maple is a dwarf compact 'Sango Kaku' with amazing form. It will reach about 6 ft in 15 years by 4 ft wide with an extremely dense habit. This dense habit increases the winter interest of Little Sango. 'Little Sango' is extremely rare and extremely beautiful. | 'Kiyohime' is a dwarf spreading Japanese maple that has a nice purple-red border in the early spring on each tiny leaf. The habit is dense and multi-branched getting much wider than tall. In 10 years, 'Kiyohime' may be 2-3 ft in height by 6-7 ft in width. 'Kiyohime' is great for containers and is a staple in the bonsai trade. | Acer sieboldianum 'Kumoi nishiki' | Acer sieboldianum 'Kumoi nishiki' is a stable variegated full moon Japanese maple. In the spring, the leaves pop out with white variegation that is extraordinary. The white sand dust variegation pops over the light green to dark green leaves. Fall color can range from yellow to orange. When I was in Japan in 2015, Kobayashi Momiji En was growing this plant and brought it out to show me in a small pot that was covered in moss. They had it under the name 'Asagi nishiki' which they agreed was the same as 'Kumoi nishiki'. 'Kumoi nishiki' is extremely cold tolerant and typically has a nice mature form reaching 8-10 ft in 15 years. I do recommend protection from the hot afternoon sun for this beauty to get established and thrive for you in your garden. | 'Kamagata' is a drought-hardy upright dwarf (6-9 ft tall) Japanese maple that's easy to grow and can thrive in a dryer rock garden setting. The trademark of this Japanese maple is that the leaf hangs delicately creating a drooping effect. Named and propagated by J.D. Vertrees, 'Kamagata' is a unique Japanese maple cultivar that adds prestige and character to your garden. Fall of color of Kamagata is a ruby red. | Cryptomeria japonica 'Yokohama' | 'Yokohama' is a dwarf Japanese cedar with a tight and compact habit of light-green foliage. Abies cilicica has a nice pyramidal form reaching 8 ft in height by 4 ft in width in 10 years. The needles are green but have a silver cast on the back side of the leaves creating an overall silver glow the the tree. As Abies cilicica ages it develops a nice bark feature similar to pines that adds an extra interest to this evergreen. Our Abies cilicica are grafted on to Abies koreana. | Picea pungens ‘Dietz Prostrate' | 'Dietz Prostrate' is a uniquely shaped Colorado blue spruce. The weeping habit is so spreading on 'Dietz Prostrate' that this conifer makes an excellent blue groundcover for the garden. 'Dietz Prostrate' may reach 1.5 ft in height by 4 ft in width in 10 years. This is a great way to add some blue color in the garden. | Sequoiadendron giganteum 'Little Stan' | 'Little Stan' is quite remarkable. It is a giant redwood, but would fit in the miniature to dwarf category for conifers. 'Little Stan' may reach 1-2 ft in height in 10 years, making this small evergreen quite a unique beauty. 'Little Stan' has a grey-green color that is quite appealing and compliments Japanese maples well. Being it has such a small stature, 'Little Stan' is easy to use in almost any landscape or garden. | Cate & Kate's Top 5 Cool Plants | Dylan's Top 5 Outstanding Japanese Maples | MrMaple's Halloween Special w/ Corbin & Bubs | | |
