Gear Up!

Dear Riders,

Pre-season events have begun, and teams across Idaho are easing into gear with casual rides, fix-a-flat workshops, skill-building sessions, and other fun preambles that serve as a mental and physical warmup for race season. As always, student-athletes and coaches MUST be registered in Pit Zone in order to participate in any NICA event.

Now's a great time to:
* Visit your local bike shop for a tune-up
* Make sure your drive train is clean and lubed
* Check your tire pressure
* Make sure your riding pack is stocked (tube, pump or C02, levers, first-aid kit)

If you're thinking it's time to upgrade your ride, mark your calendars for May 22 — the biggest bike-swap in Boise, which also raises funds for IICL. Don't underestimate the potential of an awesome used bike. My son's first NICA race bike was a 12-year-old "up-cycled" Giant ridden by three generations. Breaking it down and rebuilding it with newer components was a wonderful father-son project, learning experience, and memory.

See you on the trails (or at the swap) soon.

Pedal on!

Host a GRiT Ride

By hosting girls-only events, rides, camps, clinics and socializing opportunities, we can actively create a more welcome environment for girls to join our league and our sport. If you would like to host a GRiT event in your area or have a need for one, please reach out to our GRiT coordinator, Yadi Spangenberg (yadi@idahomtb.org). She will make it happen! It could be a GRIT ride, mechanical workshop, off-bike social, or other event. Ideas welcome!

Sign Up for Summer Camp

This summer we're rolling out our new Day Camp programming. Each camp will have three "tracks" to choose from: GRiT, Adventure, or Teen Trail Corps. The day will begin with workshops specific to each track, followed with rides and/or trail work, concluding with a fun, motivational activity. Camps will be capped at 75 student-athletes (25 per track), and Covid mitigation measures will be in place. Look for future communication regarding registration and a request for NICA Coach support. Register in Pit Zone.

Alumni Spotlight: Isaac Dixon

In 2015, before the Idaho league was formed, Isaac Dixon raced in the Utah League as an original member of the Pocatello Pioneers.

"As a senior in high school, I felt it was a powerful experience to join a sport that allowed me both to push myself physically, as well as to form lifelong friendships," he says. "I still love to ride my mountain bike as often as I can get out, and I know it will be a lifelong passion of mine.”

Isaac is now a full time student at Utah State University as well as an entrepreneur. His company, GECKODERM, makes high-quality mountain bike frame protection to help riders protect their investments and keep their bikes looking great! Isaac is offering a special discount to all NICA riders, coaches and parents as a way to say thank you for his time in the league. Check out the the Mountain Bike Protection Kit and enter discount code NICAathlete for 15% off.
