Open Afternoon

Next Wednesday 20th March at 2:40pm we are welcoming our families into classrooms to see what learning has been happening in Term 1, and for our students to celebrate all they have achieved so far. Our specialist teachers will also be showcasing work so that families can also see what has been happening in their programs. We look forward to welcoming you all next week.

School Council 2024

Our 2024 School Council met for the first time last week. We welcomed our new council members- Alison, Gurdeesh, Fiona, Peter and Binara and Stephanie Pollard, and our returning members, Vicki, Claire, James, Casey and myself. Vicki has been nominated as our School Council President for 2024. Thank you Vicki for taking on the President role for our community.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank those members whose tenure has finished - Melanie, Matthew, Jodi and Julie. The MVPS community appreciates your time and dedication over the years to the school council and subcommittees, and for the impact you have had in improving MVPS!

Sub Committees

School Councils form subcommittees to assist the Council in performing their duties and functions. Subcommittees are advisory bodies to the school council:
● they assist council with performing their duties and functions, and
● are generally established to support school council in specific areas.
Subcommittee membership is open to non-school-council members:
● providing the opportunity for the school community to be involved in school council matters.
The School Council:
● decides the purpose and terms of reference of a subcommittee
● has the final responsibility for decisions.
Subcommittees cannot make decisions on behalf of the School Council.
We are inviting members of our school community to consider joining the following subcommittees:
- Facilities
- Curriculum, Policy and Wellbeing
- Publicity, Marketing and Community
Please email or contact the office to let us know you are interested in joining a committee.

Partnership with Coles Chadstone

Last week I was extremely proud to represent MVPS, along with our students: Evan, Archie, Poppy, Tess, Edward, Ashan, Tehan, Ellie, Kara and Phillip at the launch of the new Coles Chadstone. MVPS has been selected by Coles Chadstone to have an ongoing partnership. They have also donated $3000 towards our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program.

Please keep your eyes peeled on Compass for some very exciting information on our Kitchen Garden developments!

NAPLAN

As the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) has begun, students across the state of Victoria in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 are taking part in the online testing. While NAPLAN serves as a valuable tool for assessing student proficiency, it is crucial to recognise that it is just one measure of a student's abilities and should not be the sole determinant of their capabilities.

At Malvern Valley Primary School, we understand the significance of NAPLAN assessments while also prioritising the well-being and comfort of our students. We believe in creating a stress-free environment that allows students to showcase their abilities without unnecessary pressure or anxiety. Remember, NAPLAN is just one piece of the puzzle in understanding a child's academic journey, and the focus should always be on promoting holistic growth and development.

Let's empower our children to approach NAPLAN with confidence and resilience, knowing that they are supported every step of the way.

Harmony Day

Harmony Day is on Wednesday 21st March. Students are encouraged to wear their cultural dress, blue and white (to represent Greece as Greek is our LOTE) or orange (which is the colour of harmony). Throughout the day students will take part in different Harmony Day activities.

Jump on your bike for Ride2School Day!

We’re celebrating Ride2School Day on Wednesday 28th March with bike tune-ups and Tag-On prizes.

Pedal Power Garage are coming to MVPS to tune up our bikes so we can get riding to school more often! Riding is fun, great for our health and helps to create a safer environment around the school for everyone by reducing car-traffic. We’re encouraging all our families and teachers to take part in the fun by riding to school and bringing their bikes to the sports shed from 8am for a service.

We are also awarding prizes to the students who have tagged on the most trips by bike this year. Make sure you keep using the TagOn kiosks to stay in the running!

Parents Association News

We invite all members of the MVPS community to consider joining the Parents Association for 2024. The nomination form is attached to the Compass alert which outlines further details. Joining the PA offers a unique opportunity to directly impact your child’s learning environment. The PA runs various events and initiatives during the year that aim to enrich the educational experience of our children and ensure MVPS has a strong sense of community. Victoria's Container Deposit Scheme

MVPS is now registered to receive donations through Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme. Together we can make a positive difference to our environment and our school community. We encourage all MVPS Families to return eligible bottles/cans to the Oakleigh Return It Depot (Oxford St, Oakleigh). Once your donations have been fed through the machine click on ENTER SCHEME ID and scan our school barcode (attached), and your donation will be made to the school. Keep your receipt and give it to your teacher when we return to school and the winning class at the end of each term will receive a class prize! To check eligibility of containers just look for the 10c mark or visit cdsvic.org.au

We are extremely lucky to regularly receive lovely new books in our school library. So, we are seeking a number of volunteers to help with book covering, the more volunteers the lighter the load. Before you get worried about your covering skills, we use quality contact that makes the task easy and can even be repositioned!
This is one of the only volunteer jobs that can be done at home and at your own pace. If you are interested, a box of books can be arranged to be collected from the office. The box comes with covering materials, all you need from home is a pair of scissors. When they have been covered, simply return them to the office. If you would like to be added to our book covering roster, please let the office know.

Thank you
Jo Alfano
