The first Teaching Institute (TI) event of the year was on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Many thanks to Ms. Erin and Ms. Carli for sharing so many awesome tips and techniques for Classroom Management. October's workshop will focus on Nutrition and Dancer Wellness. Stay tuned for details!

The EBT Teaching Institute is a year-round program designed for highly-motivated EBA students to apply their technical and artistic skills as trained dancers to the field of teaching and community arts outreach. Though events vary from year to year, programming options allow students to focus on different aspects of teaching, choreography and production. All TI participants are also considered for the Outstanding Mentor Scholarship for teens.

The year is off to a terrific start. Here are a few friendly reminders to keep everything running smoothly:

▪ Make sure your dancer brings a water bottle to class (and takes it home).
▪ Cell phones are not permitted at the studio. If dancers need to make a call, they can ask office staff to use the landline.
▪ We have a Leotard Exchange bin. Feel free to drop off clean, gently-used leotards and pick up whatever items you may need.
▪ Please leave valuables at home. We cannot be responsible for lost or stolen items.
▪ Last, but not least, be especially careful when driving in the parking lot. The safety of our dancers is our number one concern. Thank you.

It is always slightly bittersweet (but mostly sweet) when a student moves on from EBA. Here is a note from Rafe, who recently began a new adventure in Canada. We miss him already but are so very proud of him!

"I am sad to be leaving Emerald Ballet Theatre as it was my home for over 2 years! I have loved dancing with everyone here and have made lifelong friends. During my summer intensive in Victoria, B.C., Canada, I was offered an amazing scholarship opportunity to do their three-year pre-professional bridge program and live in Victoria, Canada. This actually will end in me having a degree in dance and the ability to be introduced to companies all over the world. It is a totally different style than the one I have been learning at EBT and is really hard for me. I will always have Russian ballet as my first love! My advice to all the students at EBT is to take EVERY class possible and ALWAYS listen to Mr. Roman and Miss Viktoria. They know everything!! I love you all and will look forward to visiting when I come home for Christmas!"

Did you know? The Boys Program at EBA is growing, and scholarships are available for the 2019-2020 school year. Boys ages 8+ are invited to audition with Mr. Roman during one of his Friday classes. The Bounding Boys class on Thursdays for ages 5+ is always free. Email info@emeraldballet.org for details.

We love catching up with EBA alumni and hearing their reflections about their time at our studio. Recently we chatted with Katie Lowell, 19, who graduated in 2018 and was the first recipient of the EBT Teaching Institute Outstanding Mentor Scholarship. Katie is entering her sophomore year at Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pennsylvania, where she is a double-major. She is studying to get a BFA in Dance and a BA in Early Childhood Education.

Q: What are some of your favorite experiences or roles you have had since leaving EBT? Has anything surprised you? What has been most fulfilling?
Katie: I have had the wonderful opportunity to work with a lot of fellow classmates in student choreography, and have pieces and dances choreographed on me, which gives a very interesting insight to the choreography process. I was able to perform in our spring show in a piece set to music by Queen. I have also had the chance to try new styles including jazz and a class dedicated to contemporary partnering. It has been extremely fulfilling to expand my skills and knowledge as a dancer in new styles I had not previously tried.

 MG 4686

Q: Describe a skill you developed or learned at EBT and how you continue to use it in your life today.
Katie: EBT helped me to develop my leadership skills, and my love of teaching, which lead me to become an education major, so that I can hopefully find ways to combine my love of dance and movement in my classroom in the future.
Q: What is your advice for younger dancers?
Katie: Have an open mind in your dancing – be willing to take risks, try new things, and fail, for you always have room to grow, and you learn more from your mistakes than from instant success. Try other styles besides just ballet if they are offered, because as important as ballet is, the dance world is so much more, and the more you can do the more doors will be opened for you in the future.
Q: Is there anything else you want to add?
Katie: Remember that college dance programs are a wonderful option for those who don't want to or can't join a company at 18. They continue your education, allow you to dance for hours each day, and offer many connections and opportunities to join companies or create a career in dance.

Thank you, Katie! Look for more interviews with alumni in upcoming newsletters.
