Dr. Tracy Devine Guzmán, Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, University of Miami, examines how how the Andean notion of reciprocity has been appropriated by diverse intellectual, cultural, and political interests since the early 20th century. Beginning with the Revista Amauta (a vanguard publication founded by José Carlos Mariátegui), and ending with the Sumak Kawsay (“living well”) movement, she discusses how the subsumption of indigenous concepts into dominant social and economic paradigms has worked to counter or support widespread and influential constructions of national community. This Talk is part of the programming for the Lowe's current exhibition, Kay Pacha: Reciprocity with the Natural World, on view through July 2, 2016. Complimentary with Museum admission and for UM faculty, students and staff.
