Dear Friend,

Welcome to the November 24, 2014 edition of FastTrack.

In observance of Thanksgiving, the Alamo Area MPO offices will be closed on Thursday, November 27 and Friday, November 28, 2014. We will resume normal working hours on Monday, December 1, 2014.

In this issue of FastTrack we provide a preview of the upcoming December 8, 2014 meeting of the Transportation Policy Board and a brief recap of the 2014 San Antonio GIS Day.

With Thanksgiving happening this week, and the start of the holiday season, we know many are going to be having holiday travel plans. TxDOT has released a new program called Roadcents to help you drive air friendly, and the National Safety Council has some tips on how to stay safe during your holiday drives.

As always, we appreciate you taking the time to read FastTrack and as always, please feel free to let us know your thoughts about any of the stories in this issue or any concerns you may have that we can help to address.

Sincerely,

The Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization

The Transportation Policy Board of the Alamo Area MPO normally meets on the 4th Monday of each month. However, during the months of November and December, due to the holiday season, the Board meeting is combined into an early December meeting.

This year, the Board will meet on Monday, December 8, 2014 starting at 1:30 PM at the VIA Metro Center located at 1021 San Pedro Avenue, San Antonio, TX 78212.

At this meeting, the Board will be presented with the recommended twenty-five year long range plan for our region, Mobility 2040. The long range plan has been under development since 2013 and represents over a billion dollars in new projects across our region.

With 34 new non-toll projects being recommended for inclusion to help address needs across the region, and 6 new managed lane projects being recommended, Mobility 2040 is a step forward in helping address the congestion that will come with an anticipated one million new residents who are expected to call our community home over the next twenty-five years.

It is important to note, however, that including projects in the long range plan does not guarantee those projects will be funded and constructed. Inclusion in the long range plan means the implementing or sponsoring agency can begin development of the project through environmental analysis and clearance and related pre-construction activities. Only when a project is included in the Transportation Improvement Program (or TIP) is the construction scheduled and funded.

The agenda and meeting package will be available during the first week of December in advance of the meeting.

New ‘Roadcents’ Web app enables drivers to access vehicle maintenance tips via smartphone, computer

AUSTIN – As drivers take to the roads for holiday shopping and family visits, the Texas Department of Transportation offers its new “Roadcents” Web app to reduce air pollution and keep vehicles well-maintained.

“We talk a lot about air pollution caused by vehicles during the warm summer months, but it’s also important for people to drive clean during the busy winter travel season,” said Margo Richards, TxDOT Travel Information Division director. “Seemingly innocent habits, such as warming up a car by idling a few minutes or postponing vehicle maintenance, can have big impacts on winter air quality.”

As part of its “Drive Clean Texas” campaign, TxDOT’s “Roadcents” smartphone Web app helps drivers save money at the pump and keep their vehicles road-ready. Along with helpful hints for keeping vehicles operating efficiently, the “Roadcents” app offers tips for reducing tailpipe emissions that contribute to air pollution.

“Roadcents” also gives drivers the tools to track vehicle maintenance and calculate how much they can save by changing their driving and vehicle maintenance habits. Drivers can receive email alerts when their vehicles are scheduled for maintenance; find nearby auto repair facilities and gas stations; and get tips on what to do in case of a roadside breakdown or collision.

A vehicle in peak condition produces fewer emissions, reduces the chance of a roadside breakdown and improves gas mileage. That’s important considering the American Automobile Association estimates 90 percent of holiday travel occurs by automobile.

Drivers can save as much as $845 a year in gas by driving more sensibly and changing aggressive driving habits like speeding and rapid starts and stops. Also, regular oil and fuel filter changes can save motorists more than $100 in annual gas spending.

This fall, TxDOT teamed up with the Dallas Cowboys to support the “Drive Clean Texas” campaign by giving one lucky Texan a donated 2015 Ford Fusion SE Hybrid as part of the “Drive Clean Texas Roadcents Sweepstakes.” Texas drivers age 18 and older have until 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 9, 2014, to enter the hybrid car sweepstakes at roadcents.org. Three finalists will receive two tickets to the Dec. 21 football game between the Dallas Cowboys and Indianapolis Colts. The sweepstakes grand prize winner will be randomly selected on Dec. 21 before the game.

To use “Roadcents,” visit Roadcents.org, create an account and enter vehicle information.

The Texas Department of Transportation is responsible for maintaining 80,000 miles of road and for supporting aviation, rail, and public transportation across the state. TxDOT and its 12,000 employees are committed to working with others to provide safe and reliable transportation solutions for Texas by maintaining a safe system, addressing congestion, connecting Texas communities, and being a Best in Class state agency.

Thanksgiving-2014

We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving!

***

Itasca, IL, Nov. 17, 2014 – The National Safety Council estimates 418* traffic fatalities and another 44,700 injuries requiring medical attention may occur from car crashes during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. It is estimated that 153 lives will be saved Thanksgiving weekend because of people wearing their safety belts.

"A hallmark of Thanksgiving is traveling to be with family and friends, but whether it involves a short drive or a long road trip, the same risks apply," said Deborah A.P. Hersman, NSC president and CEO. "Sensible precautions can make the difference between a safe visit home or an unwelcome trip to the emergency room."

NSC recommends the following tips to stay safe on the roads this Thanksgiving weekend:

Buckle up every trip, every time – even when traveling short distances
Refrain from all electronic device use – including hands-free – behind the wheel
Secure children in size-appropriate restraints
Do not drink and drive as impairment begins with the first drink – if you drink, designate a sober driver or take alternate transportation
Plan ahead and drive defensively, especially during bad weather

The Thanksgiving holiday period begins at 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 26, and ends at 11:59 p.m., Sunday, November 30. Find more seasonal safety tips at nsc.org.
