Buongiorno Tutti!

The Giro d’Italia is a famous bicycle race around Italy every May. We’re launching our own culinary Giro right here at Campo beginning with the cuisine of Campania, from Monday, April 6 through Saturday, May 11. In addition to our regular menu, we’ll be offering: Pizza Margherita, Fritto misto di frutti di mare, Cannelloni, Pasta con polpo, Salata caprese, Puttanesca and Zeppola (fried dough).

About Campania:
The Amalfi coast. Mount Vesuvius, Pompeii and Herculaneum. The Isle of Capri. Naples. Campania is one of Italy’s most revered travel destinations. No wonder Gore Vidal chose Ravello, high above the Med, as his last home. The Romans named it Campania Felix, which means fertile countryside. One look at the melon-sized lemons of Positano and it makes sense.

In fact, agriculture and food are pillars of the economy here, and that focus is evident in the cuisine. Everything is fresh, fresh, fresh! Still-snapping seafood, crisp vegetables, savory herbs, spicy peppers—everything combines to wake up your palate, enhanced by a glass of Lachryma Cristi (a crisp local white that translates to “Tears of Christ”) or limoncello, the sweet after-dinner liqueur.

And pizza was invented here, in Naples.

Here’s what we’ll be serving in April at Campo:

Queen Margherita

Queen Margherita

Pizza Margherita: It’s the quintessential Neapolitan pizza, so basic yet rich with flavor, a toothsome, tasty cheese pie simply adorned in the colors of the Italian flag: basil-green, mozzarella-white, and tomato-red. According to popular tradition, in 1889, Queen Margherita of Savoy visited Naples. Renowned chef Raffaele Esposito and his wife created a special pizza in the good queen’s honor. Come visit Campo to see what la buona regina Margherita flipped over.

fritto misto

Fritto misto frutti di mare: translates as “mixed fried fruits of the sea”, this perennial favorite takes the freshest fish available (we know the name of the boat our fish came from, and when), lightly batters it and fries it crisp and succulent. Add a squeeze of lemon, order a side of pasta and veggies, and you have satisfied your mind, your taste buds and your need for seafood.

puttanesca-1

Puttanesca: This R-rated dish is named for, well, just think Sophia Loren as Mara in Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. Puttanesca, like its namesake, is a spicy, salty Italian pasta dish. Ingredients: tomatoes, peppers, anchovies and capers. On our hand-made pasta, it’s a salacious treat for the senses.

Also on the Campania menu:
Seafood Cannelloni: Fresh pasta stuffed with seafood in a savory, creamy, cheese filling
Pasta con Polpo: Grilled octopus over fresh pasta
Salata Caprese: Basil, tomato, and fresh mozzarella
Zeppola: Italian fried dough: sweet Neopolitan street food
