New e-Drums Newsletter

We are excited to send you our new Makutsi Newsletter "e-Drums". A very busy year and some serious floods in March are two excuses for this Newsletter having taken so long to get to you. For those of you who prefer not to receive Makutsi e-Drums, feel free to "Unsubscribe" at the bottom of the Newsletter. Don't worry though, we will not send you news more often than once every 2-3 months (that is if we don't have any more floods :)

For those of you who have been to Makutsi recently, a friendly request from our side. If you have a free minute, we would appreciate if you could go to Tripadvisor and write a short review about Makutsi. More and more people are using Tripadvisor to get feedback from clients who have been to Makutsi, and your first-hand feedback is valuable to any future visitors.

Makutsi under water

In the early hours of 6 March 2014 the Makutsi River flooded due to several days of heavy rain. The water of the river pushed up to more than 5m above the river's full capacity water level. For a period of 30-60 minutes the water flooded the central area of Makutsi, including the reception, restaurant, kitchen, bar area, sounvenir shop, laundry and the tennis court. The reception and the tennis court were totally destroyed and have since been rebuilt. Fortunately the flood water did not reach any of the guest rooms, which was a huge blessing as our camp was full with 61 guests at the time. Thanks to the hard work of our staff members, as well as the patience of our guests, we managed to continue business as normal, and within a few days (almost) everything was back to normal.

Male cheetah

As some of you might already know, we have a new male cheetah in the northern section of Makutsi. We tried releasing him after a few months in the boma, however thanks to a few too many gaps in the fence, and a good looking female on the other side of the road, he broke out onto the main road 3 times in 3 days (See video). So back to the boma it was, but any day now he should be released again. We have worked hard at upgrading the fence, and hopefully we will manage to find a female soon to keep him company. Thank you Dr. Rodgers for your assistance, and thank you also to EWT and Karongwe Game Reserve for helping us in acquiring this beautiful male.

New Roman Bath

The new Roman Bath (indoor pool) is now finished and being enjoyed by all of our guests. It is filled every morning with warm water from our natural mineral spring. Each afternoon we empty the water into the garden or into the big outdoor pool, to recycle this precious water. The new location, right next to the Makutsi River, also gives you a chance to enjoying a little safari from inside the pool.

Safari Adventures

New baby Rhinos

In the last 3 months we have identified 2 new Rhino calves on the northern section of Makutsi. This will make our walking safari & Tented Camp excursion so much more exciting... going out on foot looking for the small tracks of these new Rhino calves.

Kruger Wild Dogs

One sighting that the Kruger National Park can offer that Makutsi does not, is the Wild Dog. To view a pack of Wild Dogs in the Kruger can be quite exciting as they are generally very lively & active! We have been having regular sightings of packs of Wild Dogs, which has been a real highlight to guides and guests alike.

Leopards by surprise

Jonas was coming back from the Blyde River Canyon and was lucky enough to bump into a Leopard sitting by the fenceline. It goes to show you must always have your camera ready... we never know what to expect!
A few days later Monika was bringing new guests to the lodge from the airport & also saw 2 Leopards on the fenceline! What a great start to their holiday.

Single "Premium" Bungalows

As you know, single travellers do not have to pay a single supplement to have their own private bungalow at Makutsi Main Camp (single supplement only applies for the two night sleep-out at Makutsi Tented Camp). To give those single travellers a chance to spoil themselves a little, we now have 3 new single "premium" bungalows, available to book at a small supplement. One of the added features of a premium bungalow is the prime location close to the river as well as the extended view from the terrace. Your terrace safari is awaiting you.

Dry season preparations

Each year during the wet season, when the grass is nice and long, we cut grass on the neighboring farms in order to make hay bales for the dry season. For these neighbours, it is also important as we assist them in creating fire breaks between their Avo and Mango trees. We are able to collect thousands of bales to keep in storage for the dry season. These bales are not just for the cattle but also as a back up in case of a drought and we need to supplement the feed of the wildlife. This production requires a full team to cut the grass, create bales, loading & storing. Never a dull moment for the staff on Makutsi…

Heli Patrol Success

Unfortunately the numbers of Rhinos being poached is still on the rise. In 2013 over a thousand Rhinos were killed in South Africa, and as of 30 June 2014, the number is already over 500 killed. If the killing of Rhinos continues at this rate, we can see Rhino deaths overtaking Rhino births in 2016-2018, meaning Rhinos could go extinct in the very near future. At Makutsi we are patrolling day and night, and with the help of our regular Heli Patrol Flights, have been able to keep the poachers off our land successfully. The value of these regular Heli Patrol Flights is huge, and we thank everyone who has booked one of these flights on Makutsi. Since we started this project, we have flown over 120 hours, and every hour of patrolling from the air shows those poachers out there that we are watching and waiting.
