Pastoral Reflection

pr chad picture

In Defense of Self-Interest
Pastor Chad McKenna

As much as I love my children, I have learned over the years that I am best as a parent when I care for myself as well as I care for them. Some days, that means I pour coffee in my mug before I get started on breakfast for everyone else. Or, in the sage advice of flight attendants, “Put on your own oxygen mask before turning to assist others.” Read more.

St. Market is in Need of Supplies
We have had several people utilize our St. Mark Market. The supplies are running low with the demand being higher than we have experienced in several months. The best items for St. Market are
crackers with peanut butter or cheese in them, canned goods with a pull top (ravioli is a good one), breakfast bars, bottled water, meat sticks (without refrigeration required), and other easy to carry food items that don’t require cooking or refrigeration. We have designated a spot in the kitchen to place donations, please look for the sign on the kitchen counter. Thank you for helping to love and serve our neighbors.

Pie the Pastor

Pie the Pastor
Our final fundraiser for the 2024 youth gathering trip will be Pie the Pastor and the summer intern. To pie Pastor Chad, Pastor Katrina, or Em, you will need to put your name and some money in the bucket. On July 14th after the 11am service we will draw the name of the lucky winners who gets to pie the pastors and Em. This fundraiser will take place outside, weather permitting. Thank you for supporting the youth going to the youth gathering. If you would like to give and not put your name in the bucket, you can click on this link to donate. Select Youth Trip Fundraising.

New Giving Platform
We have made the switch to an integrated church management and electronic giving platform. It is called Tithely/Breeze and it contains a secure giving platform recommended by the ELCA. This has replaced Pushpay and Shephard Staff church management system. If you need help creating an account with Tithely, please contact Martina Schumaker, finance manager at 815-398-3557 or finance@stmarklc.com. You can download the free Tithe.ly app on the App store or on Google Play. Some people have asked if they have to set up an account with Tithely and the answer is no. You can still write checks for your giving.

Thank you for supporting Vacation Bible School!
Thanks to everyone at St. Mark for supporting Camp Firelight VBS! We had an exciting week full of games, music, crafts, science and Bible stories. Of the 31 kids at VBS this year, 10 were visitors to St. Mark! If you invited a friend to VBS – thank you! It was wonderful to meet so many new families.

Of course, VBS can’t happen for our kids without plenty of adult and youth volunteers. Children’s Ministry was thrilled to have 15 volunteers join us on May 29 for our Prep Party. And during VBS week, there were 24 volunteers who gave at least two days to be with us – and most of them, of course, were here all five days. Our station leaders, group leaders, and assistants all did a great job guiding our kids through each day’s activities. Thank you!

Special thanks go to Em Johnson, our summer intern! Besides being deeply involved in weeks of preparation, Em presented each day’s Bible story, taught all of the dances, and lead the Bible Storytelling Station with care and enthusiasm. Thank you!

Finally, thank you to everyone who supported our outreach to Rock House Kids. You generously gave sleeping bags, blankets, pillows, bags, and hygiene products that will help RHK in their mission to share God’s love with Rockford’s kids by meeting their physical, spiritual, and educational needs in a safe, Christ-centered environment.
