The Cockade Column ~ Presidential Campaign Cockades

Exactly 150 years ago, a war hero, a lawyer and an explorer ran for president in 1864 and changed the course of American history.

Though there were many initial contenders for president, party primaries sifted them to the top three: John C. Fremont, George B. McClellan and Abraham Lincoln.

I intend to write in more depth about the 1864 campaign at some point, but in this column I will just focus on campaign cockades.

Cockades have been worn in presidential campaigns since our country’s founding. This George Washington cockade is often called a mourning cockade, but since black and white were our nation’s original patriotic colors, it’s entirely possible that this could be a campaign cockade instead.

Through the decades of American history, cockades played a role in presidential campaigns. In fact, black cockades were a major factor in the 1840 election.

And as recently as Jimmy Carter’s campaign for president, people were still wearing them. I happened to see this flashy red Carter rosette on eBay recently.

You have to admit that they are a classy way to highlight your favorite candidate. Maybe we should revive the style!

But back to the 1864 campaign. Did people wear cockades for their candidates then? Indeed they did!

In fact, one of my favorite pictures in my collection is of a Pennsylvanian gentleman in 1864 wearing a cockade. It’s extremely likely that it was a campaign badge since the initial Union/Secession cockade-wearing fervor of 1860-61 had worn off by 1864.

As many reenactors are preparing their 1864 living history impressions, I have decided to make campaign cockades be the Cockade Sale of the Month in my Etsy shop!

For now I'll leave you with a beautiful campaign cockade to admire.
