God Honors Our Tears

Of all three years of the lectionary cycle, this year’s All Saints readings have the most tears. Isaiah and Revelation look forward to the day when God will wipe away all tears; in John’s gospel, Jesus weeps along with Mary and all the gathered mourners before he demonstrates his power over death. On All Saints Day we celebrate the victory won for all the faithful dead, but we grieve for our beloved dead as well, knowing that God honors our tears. We bring our grief to the table and find there a foretaste of Isaiah’s feast to come.”

Discussion of the book "Trouble I’ve Seen: Changing the Way the Church Views Racism", by Drew Hart In September, Anne Anderson led a lively discussion on this book, prompting us to have another session on November 4. This book is a “Synod-Wide Big Read,” so we study it in conjunction with a number of other churches in our synod. The author, Drew Hart, will speak at Advent Lutheran on December 1. We hope some of us can attend that talk.

Sunday, November 4

The Worship Mission has designated the first Sunday of each month for donations to the Pastors’ Emergency Fund. Donations are used to assist with security deposits, rent, or other bills. Most recipients simply need a $25 gift card to Woodman’s for gas or groceries. Pastors’ Emergency Fund envelopes are included in the offering envelope packets for those who have them. There are also designated “Pastoral Emergency Fund” offering envelopes pews in the sanctuary. Simply put your name on the envelope and place it in the offering basket. Loose cash from the offering on the first Sunday of the month will go to the Pastors’ Emergency Fund. You are encouraged to make donations to the Pastors’ Emergency Fund at any time.
