Aged Care Stories, Tips and Resources   ||   Issue #11 July 2016

Dear Reader,
I've just returned from a four day holiday and feeling refreshed. I spent most of the time practicing 'couch chi' in the cottage we stayed in.

I'm avoiding looking at my 'to do list' in case I faint and end up on the couch - a place of no return. Hope you enjoy this issue - as an extra resource I've added short aged care YouTube links that may be of interest.

Regards

It was bound to happen.

Busy week - Aged Care Chair Chi Training workshop in Adelaide, 5 workshops for residents here in Melbourne. In between workshops today I quickly changed into my Tai Chi shirt in my car.

During the workshop I was referring to my Tai Chi Yin Yang symbol on my shirt but couldn't find it. Soon realised I had my Tai Chi shirt on back to front!

Alzheimers: Restoring Memory

OldMan

Very promising research from the Queensland Brain Research team at the University of Queensland.

An article published in Science Alert describes how "Australian researchers have come up with a non-invasive ultrasound technology that clears the brain of neurotoxic amyloid plaques - structures that are responsible for memory loss and a decline in cognitive function in Alzheimer’s patients".

It was tested on mice and "of the mice that received the treatment, 75 percent got their memory function back".

For those of you who are interested in hearing about it here's the ABC Health Report broadcasted 16-3-15, duration 28.30.

The research article was originally published in Science Translational Medicine.

Rain, Rain, Go Away ...

Rain

I had a very enjoyable time in Adelaide recently running an onsite Level One Aged Care Chair Chi Training workshop for eleven staff from various Resthaven Aged Care centres.

Less enjoyable was the weather - heavy rain and wind caused a bumpy ride on the plane both flying out of Melbourne and flying into Adelaide. It interfered with playing scrabble on my mobile phone though I did invent new words as my finger bounced around the screen.

High winds and rain caused havoc on the day - one participant witnessed a tree falling onto a car as she was leaving for the venue. But she did arrive in time for the start of the workshop.

The rain eventually eased off until after the workshop, as I walked to the corner to catch a taxi, it poured down. Luckily there was a tree nearby which provided shelter.
