Greetings from Bali where I arrived this week after spending a couple of days in the port city of Surabaya on Java. The city was flooded and you can read about it here.

First just a quick reminder.. next weekend is a Bank Holiday. It's May Day already can you believe..

Because of the floods in Surabaya we almost missed the flight but thankfully no queues and a very modern efficient airport got us from check-in to our seats in twenty minutes. Since the flight is only 40 minutes we are soon in Bali.

Ringo our man in Bali is delighted. Why? Because yesterday was a "container day" . We actually ship a lot of containers from Bali, but in all the years I have been coming here I have always managed to miss (honesty, not on purpose) a container day.

Our team is; Ketut, her good looking husband, Mas the security guy from the restaurant next door, a nice guy from the village, Ringo and it seems... me. Why are we doing this at this ungodly hour? Because later it will be far too hot for humping boxes. Welcome to the tropics.

After an hour of humping it is already very hot inside the container. I'm given the middle job shifting boxes from the door to the back The thing is you cannot waste an inch of space. It's a 3d puzzle you have to arrange cartons, the heavy on the bottom and in such a way as to avoid gaps at the top or sides. Normally Ringo tells me we usually hire Ubuds packing wizard. For about £10 this guy will come and chain-smoking he directs the cartons to make them fit perfectly. But sadly he is fully booked, so we have to use our own brains. This slows down the loading considerably as we have to try different stacking combinations until the gaps are gone.

At the 20ft mark we break for a few minutes and gulp down ginseng powder in water for energy. It works.

By ten it is getting hot, even Ringo is stripped to the waist we are all dripping in sweat.

By eleven o'clock we are cramming the last items in the door, Ketut repacks some teak chopping boards to exactly fit the space behind the door, ticks off the last thing on the list and we are done.
