THE BIG BUZZ ON OUR SMALL BUSINESSES

AUGUST 2019

This month a local watering hole turned 40 with a big shindig. We lost a café but gained a new juice bar, Happy Day Juice Co. And we are about to celebrate the re-opening of a local barber shop. Don't miss the chance to get on our district map and get the details on our next business mixer. Stay current. Stay connected. Join BBA today.

BUZZ

You Spin Me Right Round

Freddie Mercury, Pete Burns, Madonna and George Michael made a live appearance at the 40th Anniversary Bash for McPeet's Pub earlier this month. The 80s flashback event was a huge success. We celebrated the first pint poured at our neighborhood haunt, and raised money for Grant Athletics and the Beaumont Middle School Art. The dance floor was rockin', Pliny the Elder was flowing and owner Chris Petersen regaled everyone with the story of how the pub got its name. Too bad we can't remember it...

The Tea

Beaumont Barber Owner Louis Dominion plans to have the shop up and running again in early September. It has been a year since a fire shuttered the shop, but they are sharpening the shears, hiring new barbers and trimming a few things to get ready. We can't wait to get back in the chair. • A women's thrift and consignment shop is moving into the old Denim and Gin location at 4443 NE Fremont. Track Pacific Holiday on Instagram to keep tabs on the progress. • We keep pestering John Dunn of D & P Management about the Alameda Brew Pub property, but so far there is nothing solid to report. We'll keep you posted.

SeaSquab Go

Anchor End has left the building at 4641 NE Fremont and they've taken the Russian nesting dolls with them. We will greatly miss Amanda Lewis and Jessica Rachon, the pretzel twins, and their amazing Eurocafe'. They put so much love into the restaurant and garnered so many rave reviews from local media outlets, that we were shocked to see them go. (It was a reference to their Seasquab sandwich for those who didn't get it.)

Neighborhood Spotlight

You’ve Got Mail

Sometimes you hear him before you see him. “I’ve got something good for you,” says mail carrier Chris Lopez enthusiastically, whenever he delivers a piece of handwritten mail to your home. "It's my favorite thing to pass along because if it’s handwritten you know it's not junk mail or a bill.” Chris has been walking the 97213 beat from Pizza Nostra to Northeast 42nd Ave. for the past two years. Originally from NYC, Chris was an award-winning playwright and screenwriter in LA before moving to Portland over 20 years ago. (Check out The Contract starring John Cusack and Morgan Freeman from 2006.) With a passion for public service, Chris serves as chair of the Concordia Neighborhood Association and helps coordinate Music in the Park at Fernhill each summer. He has a Caanan Rescue Dog (also called a Bedouin Sheep Dog) from Israel, that was adopted through the Wings of Rescue program -- so of course he loves all the dogs on his route. If you bump into Chris at a local coffee shop you'll hear, "A cup of drip, please."

Playlandia

Friends of Wilshire Park were successful at raising funds to replace the dilapidated playground car, and now they have their sights set on a new playhouse for the kids. Support their playground improvements by donating to their Go Fund Me Page, or by volunteering to fundraise. Meetings are at 7 pm at Bethany Lutheran Church, 4330 NE 37th Ave., on the second Wednesday of each month. If you are a Beaumont businesses and want to contribute to this wonderful community effort, please reach out to Gary Hancock for more information. Friends of Wilshire Park would love your support.
